I'm taking the head off my Turbo ED to do some head porting. I've never had any problems with the valve springs even though I am putting out over 400rwhp and rev over 6000rpm.

The cam I have is just a mild turbo cam with 210 deg duration. Has anyone had any real need to replace valve springs (i.e had valve bounce with a standardish cam) other than ones that have broken. If so what brand. I guess Crow would be the main ones used

Tony

crow are usually the ones that get used.
i don't think they're so much of an issue unless you've got more then 500" lift.

hey turbotrana, im a newbie to fordmods too, regular 2 fordforums though, as youd know, it is really dead lately on fordforums i rekn....

any way, YES, upgrade the springs... you'll be losing power through slight valve float that you may not notice till it gets bad. the std ford springs i think run something like 80lb set pressure, and the problem is that when you put 15lb of boost against the back of the inlet valve you are adding an extra 40lb of load against the spring...... so that brings the seat pressure down to 40lb. NOT even close to enough to stop float at 6000rpm.

with mine, i have got some crow springs, that started as 110lb seat pressure, and then i shimmed them up 60' to give a seat pressure of 132lb, so with 15lb boost, ill still have more pressure than the normal crow heavy duty springs. which are 90lb

i used single springs just because they didnt require any machining, crow reccomends different retainers (becuase the o.d is slightly larger than the std ones) but im attempting to run the std ones, they are fitted and waiting for action, soon as i fininsh everything else.

In my younger years I would just replace them but as I get older I now have the attitude if it aint broke why fix it. But as I plan to go up to 20+psi I will guess I will just replace and be done with it.
Thanks for the help.

EBS-4l, yeh that other forum is a bit dead, but in general alot of forums tend to be a bit quiet lately

Would there be valve bounce at less than 6000rpm? Like 5000rpm? Mine seems to go right off power at 5000, could this be valve bounce? on 15 to 18psi too

chef... i would say that thats almost a definate. that much boost on std springs would have no chance. and the symptoms area severe drop in power, usually around the 4500-5000 rpm mark

svo... the doubles you would have are 125lb, so my shimmed up ones are slighlty stiffer. and my cam has 520' lift.

Thanks ebs_4l, that looks like another job for me.
So what springs do we need and are they easy to change?

what ever you get you dont want any more then 110 to 120 pounds installed pressure. you run into HLA problems if you do

crow do a spring ISKY do a spring.

i used the 7738's from crow... the ones svo has would be the 7333's.

BTW tickford_6, howcome these springs are readily available and recommended, and used by SVO with no problems!!

whats your research behind that comment??
