hey guys
whats the best spot for an external wastegate to get its boost reference from? the turbo outlet has a boost line fitting on it, im assuming its for the wastegate, now from my understanding (correct me if im wrong), the boost pressure at the turbo outlet will be different to the pressure in the manifold due to boost lost through the intercooler.. so if the boost pressure at the outlet is 7psi and if it lost 1-2 psi through the cooler realisticaly the engine and boost gauge would only see 5 psi is this correct?? now if i run the wastegate boost line to the manifold the wastegate will open at a honest 7 psi at the manifold does this make any sense??? or is my theory wrong? |

you're spot on.
You can hook it up to anywhere thats pressurised. mine it off the manifold (brake booster hose to be exact)

YEP !! Keep in mind after the throttle body it will get vacuum on de throttle...
"Some" wastegate diaphragm don't like vacuum...

hmm. i didnt think about that..
its a 45mm tial wastegate if that helps... |

If your not going to use your compresser housing as the wastegate reference
without a EBC to accuratley compensate and worried about the pressure drop due to intercooler and piping design.., instead of using your intake manifold as the reference why not just tap into the piping a few inches before the throttle body??

I'm running the boost reference off my intake manifold to the ext. wastegate and have no problems
I've heard that way, the turbo comes on harder than running off your turbine housing, but I could be wrong. Alex |

i originally i had it running off the manifold, i did find it seemed to spool a little better but did spike a tiny bit, i just put it down to a slight delay in the wastgate responce due to the extra long hose?
but i did change it over to the turbo outlet and i noticed i had next to no pressure drop, 0.5psi if lucky which was a good thing.lol.. although i did notice a nice improvement in spool time with using an adjustable boost t, not just the obvious abillity to raise boost pressure but that the waste gate started opening later. as with no boost t, the 7 psi wastegate spring would start to open around 4 psi and open further to maintain 7 psi.. where the boost t delayed the pressure to the waste gate untill the boost t receiced aprox 6psi and the waste gate would open almost instantly, which appeared to give a faster spool time.. |
