Can some one explain to me exactly how they work, i sort of understand. People have told me their a waster of time for a s/c engine, im thinking of supercharging my xr6 and was contemplating on an air to air or water to air. Only thinking of running 11psi boost. Any help would be great

We are discussing this very subject in this thread. Please read

Biggest advantage of using one is that you reduce the pipe length, and thereby reduce the volume of air between the supercharger and cylinders to be compressed, meaning less boost drop. I'm looking at changing to one at some stage, would mean I could run the same boost with a larger pulley which would cause less labour on the engine to turn the supercharger, also lower internal RPM of the supercharger would mean prolonged life expectancy.

The benefits of these kits are endless, and will suit just about any boosted application and setup.
For me, I'll run a smaller boost pulley with the w2a kit and see what happens from tuning that.

OK i understand now, what is the vlc for raptor superchargers option about ? and what is water injection ?

{USERNAME} wrote: OK i understand now, what is the vlc for raptor superchargers option about ? and what is water injection ? The VLC option runs a metal water jacket around the raptor unit itself. Similar theory to a water to air unit, there is a water pump that circulates water around the raptor via the water jacket in effect cooling the raptor itself for cooler air to enter the engine. Cost is about $1100 and will require the raptor to be sent back to Tim for modification. This system works good, but can be susceptible to heat soak if pushed too hard. Water injection is a spray of water that comes from container to an injector that combines with the air and fuel and enters the combustion chamber effectively cooling the intake charge. Its setup to inject water spray at the right time as the engine rotates. Down fall is you need to keep an eye on the levels of water in the container daily, plus this method can cause issues with tuning, and I have heard rust may appear in the bores too. Cost is cheap, but your risks are higher for damage if not tuned right to begin with. While the above methods have worked on other cars, you need to discern your application for your car. i.e. the VLC unit is good option, but it can be dependent on how hard to drive your car, and what kind of peak power your looking for. There may be other issues Im not aware of too. Could be an alternate option if funds dont permit for the w2a intercooler. But from what I have seen, not as good gains as the w2a intercooler. The water Injection route is good for drag racers. I have seen great effects of water injection especially if your car is purely track based. But yes, if you dont keep an eye on water levels daily, and run dry, you run the risk of detonation and further damage. Smaller cost is a plus, but more maintenance and attention is required.

Ok, thanks for that
As i am i getting a shaker installed, would it be good to run the piping form that to the air filter of the raptor when i get it ? |

Sounds like a lot of expense for no gain. Run the intake from the Raptor to your front bumper if you were to do anything. This will assist in better airflow of the intake. Just a matter of making a 3" hole in your inner guard and run some new 3" mandrel pipe to the best suited place possible for maximum air flow. By all means have the shaker but only put it on for decoration rather than purpose.

Depending on how hard it is to plumb it to the shaker thats the route I would take as it's better than cutting unnecesary holes in your cars bodywork... |

BTW - why not trade your BF XR6 for a BA XR6T. Bang for buck you'd be better improving the factory turbo than complete aftermarket supercharger set up, a lot less hassles too...

Yeh i might just do the shaker for decoration, it looks super cool
I was thinking of going a turbo 6 but i also have a mercedes that i am putting a toyota 1j motor into i wanted to do something different with the xr6, do you rekon it would be possible running a larger vortech but doing all the internals on the xr6, decent power gains ? |

Yes there will be more power gains I reckon, but I think you'll spend double on a setup like that compared to a Raptor kit.

Yeh, i believe the raptor is the best bang for your buck
