Doesn't the autronic need ignitors for the coil?

He is using a wolf, that doesnt work with the TFI module does it? Rank rotary fitted an M&W ignitor on my EB when the wolf was fitted a few years back.

thats right they don't need a igniter, they can use the tfi.

with the wolf u could use the bosch 227 022 008 igniter.

What is an 'igniter' and what is its main function and why is it needed when using an aftermarket ECU? I have heard things about this, but it has always been a mystery to me :? .

ok...

igniter, cdi, tfi, bosch 008 module, m&w etc etc are all forms of igniters

an igniter is just an ignition module basically, something to turn the coil primary current on and off, some modules are SMART modules, which means they have internal dwell control, others are DUMB modules which means your ecu needs to do the dwell control...

you should be able to fire the tfi with any aftermarket ecu... we, so i think.

most COP ignitions use coils with built in igniters..

any further questions??

if the wolf doesn't fire the tfi it would be one of the only that don't.

Oh okay, i think i understand now, thanks for clearing that up. There are a few terms i'll have to look up, the ignition system has always been a 'grey' area for me, but i'm getting there. Thanks again guys!

The more I find out about the commercial ECU's the more impressed I am with the Megasquirt 2's.

With the MS2 you can fire the coil directly from the ECU (no igniter needed), send spout signals to the TFI, or wire it up to an EDIS module for EF/AU coil packs.

If only it had the outputs for COP without expansion boards...

ebs_4l: Perfect example! EDIS, COP, spout signals, WTF!? Haha, there's so much to learn, especially aftermarket ignition systems. Don't try and explain it to me, at the moment it will go in one ear and out the other, i'll start researching to see what i can find  .
