A few mates of mine were bumbing around one night and we struck up the idea of strapping the big mumma HKS T51R to either a 4.0 I6 or a 347 stroker V8. In both situations it would be used as a big single. We know we'll never afford a setup like this but considdering that one of these turbos when used on an SR20 is enough to snap engine mounts and bellhousing bolts when it comes onto boost would it actually be well suited in either of our fantasy combos as they are at least double the size of the pissy 2.0L. Therefore the engine will actually swallow the boost and not rock violently and choke with compressor surge when it comes onto boost. What do you guys reckon?

how big is it compared to the T88-34D?

It is probably a touch wider than the rocker cover on an SR20. Imagine something a bit bigger than a T88 34D but with dual roller bearings instead of the plain bearing design of the Trust T88. Only the brave and stupid fit them onto anything under 3 litres. I'll try and dig up the specs but on an SR20 they begin to build boost somewhere along 4300rpm and by 4800rpm they have already hit peak boost. I was thinking that in a high capacity motor such as the 4.0 that it will spooll up around 2800 to 3300rpm (just going off the top of my head, no actual calculations yet). perfect for drag racing.

Just wondering how that thing will be down low as all the 6cyl ford turbos only run stall converters with only a 2800 max stall and some even run stock diff gears. The Vl turbo boys generally all run converters over 3800 minimum and diff gears shorter than 3.45:1. The turbo's of choice are slightly larger on average for the VL compared to the falcons but what would happen if we strap their big mumma turbo's and high stall converters onto our cars. I'm quite sure a sub 10 ain't out of the question. After all there are plenty of VL's now running high 9 second passes.
I guess the only way to know how good this thing really is on a 4.0 or 4.1 is for some crazy C*** to bolt one on and see. |

If you were rich, fit two of the spl versions (with big a*** engine to match) and still loose the Horse Power hero comp at Summernats.

Why's that? Did someone crack well over 1500 this year?

Apparently not, Eddy Tassone won Horsepower Heroes, making 1259.6 horsepower at the rear wheels.
But have you ever seen many engines output as much as the turbo is rated for (other than high tech race engines), I would love to know how much actually driveline loss Eddy is getting.

I've seen a few cars with single turbos rated at 700hp make around 500hp at the wheels so it all depends where you measure the hp from. Also cars like Eddies actually wheel spin on the rollers. That's why there can be an over 3 or 4 hundred hp differens between the flywheel and the driving wheels. The only sure fire way to measure hp at the wheels is to do what the NASCAR boys do and take the wheels off and bolt the dyno to the axles.

Sure, they do get wheelspin, but its not the only reason why theres horsepower loss. Drivetrain does take out a fairly significant amount of power

I've seen Eddy do an 8 second pass at Kwinana. Awesome stuff. He had a powerglide in it then.
When he made 1256hp at Summernats he had a manual gearbox in the car and ran those numbers in fourth (1:1) gear. Afterwards when he pulled the box out it was twisted up inside, like a pretzel. Since making 1256hp at Summernats he has made over 1500hp back home in Perth. He later crashed the car at Kwinana. I think he has rebuilt it with another body shell. Either way, it is now dark blue.

Back on topic. Does anyone know what is the HP rating of a HKS T51R? The only info I can get is of A/R ratios, turbine and compressor wheel sizes and the trim of the turbine.

I'd guess, for a 4lt, some minor spool by 3000rpm, would be in the middle of its effiency range at around 5000rpm and prob'ly keep boosting to 8000rpm.... might get 500kw@wheels though some huge dollars might be required for the motor build up
Thats a massive day dreaming guess |
