hey everyone,
the other day i pulled my turbo off my ba and the intercooler and all the pipes too, cleaned out the piping and i/c and fixed a leaking oil drain gasket on the turbo, put it all back on, only now thick whit smoke comes out the exhaust, it appears after being driven for about 1/2 hr when the cars fully warmed up. and ONLY when i come to a stop on idle AND only once every 20 - 30 times i stop... so for example, i got up in the morning, drove about 20kms in fairly moderate traffic, took about 1/2 hr or a bit more, till the smoke appeared randomly after stopping at a set of lights, THEN i took off, it went a way and didnt come back till i got back nearly home again, stop at a set of lights ( i had stopped plenty of times between and before that ) and it happened randomly again, it goes away when i drive, if i give it a good boot, no smoke comes out behind me, its ONLY wen im stopped intermittently and randomly, its not water vapour, its way too thick and has a very slight blue tinge to it... which i know is oil, but is there a master guru out there that can pin point WHY, it happens only when im on idle, at random intermittent times, and GOES AWAY when i take off?? i would have thought it was the other way around... smoke as i drive and less wen im stopped...any tips in the right direction would awesome THANKS |

Oil drain not blocked or clogged in any way?

I'm 99% sure it's not blocked, BUT if it was how and why could it cause the symptoms I described above? Y was that the first thing u thought of?

Because if the drain is blocked, it will push oil past the seals. Otherwise, valve stem seals.

Ok I'll double check the oil drain LOL turbo off again * sigh *
But y would it do it at random intervals wen I'm stopped and go away wen I drive? If it was valve stems wouldn't it smoke up at random intervals wether I'm stopped or driving? |

I doubt your BA would have valve stem issues unless it has huge kays.

when you cleaned the intercooler and pipework do you mean you cleaned inside?? if so was there oil in there??
and what did you use to clean it with?? |

yes, i cleaned the INSIDE of the cooler, and pipe work, and yes there was lots of oil in there, BUT it has been there for a while, i had the oils seals replaced a while back, and it turned out the intake side oil seal was rooted, i had cleaned it all out and done the same thing, only this time, i had put it back together with a catch can that was too small, pressurizing the sump, causing back pressure UP the oil drain, and back into the i/c and piping through the new oil seal, about a month ago i fixed that, and am not pressurizing the motor in any way now, this was the reason for cleaning the i/c and pipes once again, i used degreaser, carby cleaner, water and an air blower to clean out the i/c and pipes, i know that it is possible that it is the oil burning in the combustion chamber but it seems strange that this smoke has appeared after i cleaned/ fixed my problems on the car, and the oil mixing in the comb. chamber should produce more smoke whilst on boost if anything, not go away wen i come on boost yeah?

if it was oil it would be blue smoke he said thats it white so its not likely to be oil related

when you blow a turbo its oil that is pumped through the intake and into the exhaust not raw fuel..

not 100% on petrols but if you blow a turbo in a diesel it blows white smoke due to exhausting raw fuel, and oil can only pass if you snap the shaft
