Im just wondering if anyone here has actually gone through the engineering process and had your turbo ford made legal?
Im trying to do it now and its proving impossble without a test that costs $3000 each time you try even if you fail. This is in Victoria. Any one got any tips for me or have a contact that I could go through without the need for this test? |

Or blower?
So... that $3k is for the EPA test i gather... I hear its an automatic fail with an aftermarket ECU? Nah, just quietly... mine hasnt been vetted... from what I hear, not too tough with the CAPA kits as they meant to be street legal (10:1 air/fuel suggests otherwise.... *cough*). But then, we dont have roadworthy checks for rego here and police are pretty cool if you're not acting like a moron. I thought usually you contact the traffic authority to get in contact with a registered engineer... who 'signed off' on the setup... is this what you've been trying? Maybe go study engineering for a few years and sign off on yourself?

Getting an engineering degree is looking to be the only option.
That $3000 is just for the emissions test. I rang an engineer in SA and he said the same test is required there. Im waiting on a call from a NSW engineer who is Vicroad accredited, he is the last one on the list from vicroads in a different state, hopefully he doesnt need proof of the official ADR37 test to pass the car. Its just the emissions holding me back. I hav rung every engineer in the vicroads listing and they all say I need the $3000 test and if I fail that I have to change things and spend another $3000 to see how i go. The aftermarket computer is not an issue once its engineered and meets emissions. Im this close to putting a factory engine, 5 speed and computer into the AU and selling off the 400kw package for as much as I can. |

Yeah, makes it a bit easier to understand why factory-turboed ricers are so popular hey...
Tried bribing any of the engineers?

Yep, If only I bought a VL turbo
Havent tried Bribing yet, they can lose their jobs so I dont think its an option. I got the car pretty cheap, I can still pay to get a new stock engine and driveline in there and still be in the vicinity of a stock AU XR price. I suppose it would still be an awesome car even if it was NA, I bought Mal's old car HOTDBZ btw. But still, I want something fast as hell. An NA XR6 wont cut it. |

Apparently this is what an RTA/EPA emissions test looks like

LPG still requires the same emission testing, I have been told as a guide by the EPA that it only voids all testing needed when used on a car what was originally carbueretted or pre 86 and pre ADR37.
Ill make some more calls tomorrow to NSW engineers. |

Ill make some more calls tomorrow to NSW engineers. You can still fail on LPG if it isn't up to scratch too, a mates straight gas 302 XD failed running a OHG X450 (from poor memory) and there was a few tries at it, he got hit once by EPA when it was still using petrol just outside a Sydney car show, once you are hit it is hard to pass again, EPA workshop (what ever they call it in Sydney) testing is far harder than roadside tests.

I have spoken to my last vicroads accredited guy who resides in NSW, He will be the one I go to I think. He is fine with me using the NSW testing facility which is free! Yay!
He also suggested that I talk to a local engineer and suggest that I get a comparitive analysis between my car and a stocker from the same year and that they should sign off on that as proof. That sounds like a great idea as I can do it local but wether a local engineer will accept that is a different story. I cant see why they shouldnt accept it but who knows with the EPA here. |

You could always go to your local Dyno and get a 4 Gas analysis done as a bit of a guide. Try and get the car tuned within spec before running off to the EPA for expensive tests.
But if youre saying you can get the test done for free, youre laughing anyway. I'd imagine any car with a properly tuned aftermarket ECU and a freshly rebuilt donk could potentially have cleaner emissions than a stock EA CFI with 400,000 on the clock

I rang a few local engineers and the comparison test fizzled out, noone wants to see that.
I think Ill get the comparison test done here cos he will accept that then head over to NSW to have the official engineers testing done by a Vicroads accredited engineer. Anyone live near Hornsby or know any good tuners that can help it meet the official NSW emission test requirements?? It might be a bit hard to drive to NSW for the test if I fail it a few times. Ill have to wait about 3 weeks inbetween tests if that happens. This engineer suggested the comparative test with a stocker so that way should be fine and I can do it locally, hopefully Ill only need to take a week off work and crash in a local hotel or something. I can take the girlfriend away and pretend its for her benefit. Still accomodation up there for a week will be cheaper and Im guaranteed not to waste $3000 failing a test. |

I'm not far from Hornsby.
Fordmods uses Crescent Motorsport's Dyno, they are in Liverpool. About 45-60 mins south from Hornsby. In hornsby there is Quick Fit Motorsport. http://www.quickfitmotorsport.com.au/

Thanks mate.
Im pretty happy with myself at the moment. If this all works out Ill be a very happy AU XR6 turbo owner that wont have to worry about getting pulled over! w00t! That by itself is worth a few grand messing around. How convenient is a vicroads accredited engineer living in NSW. Hopefully he will accept the comparitive test between 2 cars, that will save me risking a trip up and maybe failing on the NSW official testing machine, even it is free its not really convenient. Who is up for a cruise! |
