As you may have noticed in the other thread (sorry!) i've been offered a t04e hybrid turbo.
I've searched around and it seems that the t04e is quite suitable for this application (really aiming at low boost/power levels). Basically the plan would be get another exhaust manifold and hack it up as CHEF did and bolt it upto that, then get some pipe bent to make a dump pipe. To handle to fuel issue i was just gonna run rising rate fuel reg and maybe new pump (remember i'm aiming really low power) I would run an r34 gtt stock intercooler till I cbf getting a big FMIC. ---- My only gripe is i've read to "stay away" from the garrett knock offs. The guys bringin the turbo in tomorrow so i can check it out.. what am i looking for to help verify its a legit garrett.. I"ll be taking pics too What am i looking out for? |

Your looking for Garrett cast into both exhaust and compressor housing. The will also be a little metal tag on the back of the compressor housing.
If its a china rippoff, some work, some dont... your gamble Regarding intercoolers, just fit a big one first up, they only cost 175 now new... saves you changing pipes ect later on. and the skyline ones are pretty ordinary |

Yeah good point.
Alright i've checked out the turbo. The box it came in looks like a legit garrett box. Inside it had a tag on the turbo for the installation instructions. tag looks legit. Garrett is spelt right, has "Allied Signal" stuff on it. Onto the turbo: Compressor housing says AiResearch T04 and the exhaust has Garrett cast into it. Thats pretty much all i've checked out so far, will be checking it out later, and hopefully can source a camera. So far it looks legit but i'm a skeptic so |

Well thats an Airesearch turbo then, they are good as they use garrett parts. Plenty of them making big power on cars all round the world.

Air research is Garrett..Thats what they used to call them before the GT series cam out...GT stands for Garett Turbo...

isnt dcstraight running a smaller sized turbo on his EL?

No, actually Air Research is an off shoot of Garrett. Some of the people left Garrett many years back to start their own business and I think specialise more with truck turbos. Don't quote me on the last bit.
The GT are a new series of turbos that Garrett are offering. Its supposed to be a substantial improvement in every respect from new wheel designs and improved bearings. Virtually everyone are copying Garrett's older less efficient wheels for their turbos. The GT wheels are supposed to be like chaulk and cheese compared with the older stuff. No one has the budget like Garrett I believe to sucessfully develop new turbos. I have a Master Power turbo at home. Its a 60-1 with a P Trim turbine. The wheels are Master Power but the design is like 20 year old Garrett. |

I would make sure the turbine a/r is not like 1.15 plus or less than .81.
I personally would not buy a turbo if I did not know all the specs of it unless it looked physically correct and was really cheap. To buy the wrong turbo, then upgrade to the correct turbo could cost as much as a new GT ball bearing Garrett turbo. Buying a T04E or B is fairly irrelevant today. You can can the same specification wheels that will fit on either. As long as the turbo is a T04 the wheel and turbine selection is huge. AFAIK T04E runs a large diameter shaft with larger bearings for better high boost longevity, although again a 360 deg thrust upgrade in a T04B will do virtually the same job and have no difference below 8 psi. |

One year later, with customers totaling 130, the entrepreneur moved his growing business to a new location. Ahh.. good i spose?
One thing i did notice when i looked at it again.. it has the oil feed/drain holes on the top/bottom.. it also has some red caps on the sides which i'm assuming is for water cooling? Good/Bad?? |

update.... pics!!
just took some photos with works minidvdrw cam.. f**k they're washed out to the s**t! but anyway.. bit of rust on exhaust side cause the oil that was on it has rubbed off. Them red caps are for the water part of it.. apparently, they are on the sides while the oil feed/drain is on the top/bottom. turbo 1 2 3 4 |

Looks good. So from pics we can see its got a T3 manifold flange, water cooled core as you said, and internal wastegate.
Have you bought it? Like I said above, It will work ok, just wont have much power up high and no room for growth ( more power mods ) Worst case, buy it, set it up, drive round with maybe 160wkws and when its time to get serious buy a bigger unit with the same T3 manifold flange... that way you only have to cut off the dump pipe flange and weld a bigger one on, and mod your intercooler pipe to fit the new comp housing. Oil and water lines will be the same. |

Wait wait!!! What is the turbine wheel size ????
That is a T3/4 Hybrid and can produce as much 680 h.p I have the same or similar as twins on my V8 with T 350 - 2.44 turbine wheel.. Which one of these from Precision does it match to? http://www.pagparts.com/perfpts1.asp?pp ... =sportt3t4 You'll have to measure yours to compare?? Take turbine / comp covers off.. In this case though it may choke in upper rpm?? It will make good power and plenty of air speed [boost] at low rpm... A.R is only part of the equation...That exhaust housing looks like its off U.S engine Like Buick or SVO Mustang.... Here's one of my turbo's [ on the left]..I cut the rear out of wastegate and welded dump pipe dirrectly over wastegate and exhaust with splitter [can be seen between turbo's] between the two so wastegated exhaust flow was hindered and caused no turbulance..The std housing exhaust from w/g has a tough path...

I've got the turbo in my car. ohh so pretty!! But yeah the plan is to get it up and running. Have a bit of fun and then either take it off or leave it and put a block under the accelerator!! The plan for the future is to one day get a proper ECU then get it nice and tuned and then maybe later check out more power (+gearbox etc.. ) I also got a turbosmart boost tee boost controller for $30 off the same guy who got it for about $150 or so the put it on his GTT and fooled around then took it off. ebxr8380: I might check out the wheels this weekend and check it out. It originally came from a guy who got it from the US. Apparently the guy went to the US got the turbo then flogged it off. Now for the two of you.. some questions The turbo has a hose running from the compressor housing to the wastegate actuator. Is this actuator set at a certain pressure, and as a result i wont be able to use my $30 boost controller? The rod running from the actuator to the wastegate is adjustable, is this where the pressure is set?? Is the boost tee suitable for external wastegates? What do i use for the oil line? i see on GCG they have fleixble silicone oil line for $165/m. I can just use braided steel lines cant i?? Which line feed/drain flange thingies do i need? Where would i be able to source this stuff? I'll try to get around to making a diagram to see if i've got this correct in my head before i proceed in buying bits n pieces!! Also what is the advantage of the water core? Does that mean that it'll just run cooler? Will this be hazardous to the mighty ford engine with the sensitive cooling system (read head gasket/frying??). Will i be able to run it without the water cooling or since its included does that mean it absolutely has to be hooked up? Hmm this'll do for the time being. Unfortunately i probably wont be able to check up on this until monday at work. No net access at home, at a mates atm :\. So yeah i'm normally online 9-5 mon-fri!! Thanks guys! |
