I recently purchased a 03 Ford Falcon Xr6 turbo 5spd manual. And have been looking into what options are avaliable for me and what my best option for the next step or couple of steps to take would be. So far ive just cut in the F6 intake for my airbox.

I happened to be speaking to someone the other day who does alot of work on xr6 turbos and he told me due to the fact i have a 5spd in my car im probably limited at about between 260-280rwkw and i could have 300rwkw if i drove it gently.
He told me anything above 300rwkw no matter how much i attempt to get the 5psd strengthen it will die. He said that the 5spd gearbox is just not capable of handling above 300rwkw and id need to upgrade to a 6spd if i was looking at going for more than 300rwkw.

But ive seen on here and in a few other places theres quiet a few pplz running 300rwkw or more on 5spd xr6 turbos.

So just wondering if anyone would like to put there 2 cents worth into what ive mentioned above because im very interested to hear what fellow xr6 turbo owners have to say about this matter.

mate you can run 400rwkw in a 5sp manual.. but dont expect it to last longer then a gold fishes memory. if i were you, just get a decent 3 inch exhaust and give it a flash tune, the tune will give you a more liner torque spread, so the power is more constant so less stain from boost on the box, that alone i think is the wisest modification for you to do

The problem with the 5 speeds is that the case flexes and strips 3rd gear. You can get aftermarket cases, but by that stage it just isn't worth keeping the 5 speed. A mate is doing the T56 conversion into his BA XT, so far prices are: T56 - $2365 Brand new (sourced away from Fraud/MalWood), Tailshaft modified to suit the T56 and removing the rubber dampner - $685, mount for the T56 - $100 (trade price @ Ford) the clutch is useable in the 5 and 6 speeds.

The good old T5, I havn't got a BA but i have AuIII XR6 that i've thrown a turbo and am still running a T5. Well I was, i've blown it up for second time last month. The car made 226kw 674nm and threw the stanard box apart in about 2 weeks (3rd gear), this is back in july 08. I got another box out of an XG ute and striped all the internals out of it and put them on my main shaft ( Au main shafts and selector housings are longer). no new bearings didn't have a job at this time, back yard rebuild and i only striped 2nd gear last month the car now makes about 285rwkw and 780nm, AU's are lighter than BA-BF's so i wouldn't expect them to hold up any more than 250rwkw. I also had a 10.5 inch cusion paddle button clutch and alloy flywheel made up and fitted about 3 months ago.
I drive my car pretty hard as it is only my thursday night and weekend warrier, I have a land cruiser for every other day. I'm now lookin into C4 auto Or T56 conversion. hope this helps, that is my exprience so far. Keep boosten

ohk thats interesting to hear.
ive been assured the 5spd in my BA will easily do up 260-270rwkw but ne thing above that im pushing it depending on how i was to drive.
As people hav told me theyve had people running 300rwkw on 5spd manual and its lasted 12 months because they havnt driven it hard.

I wont be pushing my 5spd to that limit tho, cuz i dnt see any point having that much power if i cant even put my foot down.

but ive been assured that the gearbox will hold up fine at 260-270rwkw

its all how you drive i guess but even babying it it will eventually break under a large amount of power.
with a bit of thrashing the 5spd and the 4spd have been known to give way under stock power in these cars.

ive got a 4spd xr6 turbo so i know your pain, the 4spds seem to hold up abit better though

agreed with that.
youd have to really thrash it though to blow up a 5spd on stock xr6 turbo.
Like i occasionally put my foot down when pulling onto busy hwy or something.
But i guess people who basically everywhere they drive it and from everytym they stop flatten it off the line would break a 5spd or 4spd on stock xr6 turbo.

I know a guy who killed one in an EL GLi with an exhaust and diff gears, another mate killed 3 with 200rwkw. ken_xt has almost killed his, in a STOCK BA XT. They are weak as. Get a 6spd!!!

its all about how u drive and change gears

Either avoid 3rd gear, or don't bring power on in 3rd and it will be fine. As soon as power comes on in 3rd, it's all over

Not an old wives tale. 5 guys I know have blown 5 speeds. Two now have T56's, with out a drama, one of those got a powerskid run at PC19, and smoked 2nd,3rd AND 4th gears with no brake and the box lasted.

3rd in a T5 is actually a thinner gear than 5th in a T56!

Yes, 3rd is the weakest link, the case flexes, and 3rd gear strips. The box it self is a ticking time bomb.

The old wive's tale is true for a stanard car these t5's are alright, i'll put it this way my car makes roughly 170kw at the fly stanard, and i'm only guessing but i reckon i'm makin about 320kw at he fly now, so the box really isn't to weak, even though i've blown mine i had given it a hard life for the last 12 months. skids, tuning (on road), racing. there not that bad of a box IMO. But if you push you car around that 300kw mark it needs to be up graded they just won't handle it when you do put you foot down to beat that clubby one day. lol, T56 or build an auto if you want to run numbers down the strip.
Keep Boostin

Chris.
