Out of interest, did the filter block and starve it of oil?

nah i have a tendency to drive it like i stole it, and after i stalled it up at a set of lights and took off in a cloud of smoke it started ticking, my mechanic said its not the motor, my gearbox rebuild guy said its not the gearbox so i pulled off the exhaust running thru the dump only, u can hear the ticking echoing loudly from the dump and when u spin the impeller by hand u can hear it rubbing and ticking, my guess is a bent shaft or impeller fin

nasty
is the exhaust producing smoke? if so, its the seals that are f**k. and if the shaft is bent, then the seals would be displaced a tad, which would result in oil escaping past the seals and into the exhaust.. meaning white smoke again from exhaust |

An exhaust leak is cheaper to fix than a turbo rebuild! Lucky.

Easy fix is good Nizpro do inconel studs I think, the stock ones can loosen from heatcycling, and are meant to be tightened every service

how does the broken stud explain the rubbing ticking noise you claimed you could hear when spinning the impeller by hand??

I've had this happen to a friend’s car, just goes to show that letting these things cool down before switching them off is a good Idea. Most of the turbo side of the oil supply line was also blocked. |

Yeah it's pretty common, it's not in the Ford service schedule to clean the supply filter apparently, you have to specifically ask for it.
Just like autos never need their fluid changed, good work Ford!

When you say "Filter" are you refering to the bango fitting at the engine block? This one I saw was blocked at the turbo end only.

Interesting, there is a screen filter at the block fitting, thats generally what causes the problems.

I pulled all that apart and couldn't find any filter. All that was there was the bango fitting.. Do you have any photos of this "filter"
The oil had baked on the inside of the oil line where it runs past the hot side of the turbo and then along the top of the exhaust manifold. The turbo bango bolt was completly blocked with this burnt carbon looking oil. I spent the best part of 2 hours trying clean out the oil feed line and gave up in the end. After spending all that time I still got small chunks of soild oil droping out of the line when I hit it on the ground. |
