Hi guys,
I have a really annoying rattling noise coming from somewhere in the engine bay of my 2003 XR6T.
It has been serviced at every time required, and she is running fine. but i keephearing this little rattle noise and its bugging the hell out of me.
any normal person might not have even noticed the noise as you cant really hear it with the radio on, but as im a sales rep im usually driving around on my mobile phone and have to have the radio turned off.

Im thinking it might be the tension on some bolts in the inlet manifold and exhaust manifold, as you can only hear the rattle when the engine is under load.

can anyone confirm this? or had similar problems?

Ford service are pretty useless with this sort of thing, as the engine is running fine they dont seem too worries about the noise!

thanks in advance,
Adam

Could be your turbo falling off.
And no, that's not a joke :(
Old mans went in with a engine bay rattle, turned out to be turbo loose on the manifold.
Supposedly they are meant to be retensioned every service, but this is ford we are talking about

He's also had a shocking rattle at startup lately, think they fixed it this week, I'll have to ask him what it was.

Now you have me worried!!!!

it is a very faint rattle - I hope im not gonna loose the turbs...

I forgot to mention I took it to my local ford workshop, they sent an old bloke out for a drive with me. he could hear the noise, but suggested i wait till the next serivce to see what it could be (next service is 7,000 Km's away) and in the mean-time keep an ear on it....

Haha, I dunno whether it can actually fall off...
I'd imagine you'd notice a loss of performance before it dropped on the road

Surely if he could HEAR the rattle, he'd do something about trying to find it?
Waiting till it gets worse so they can find it easier seems a strange diagnostic method
I'd get a bit agro next time you're in there, see if you can get them to be a little pro-active about it.

Offtopic, but interesting story.
When dad had his in getting that rattle fixed, he picked it up only to find out it now had a shocking vibration while driving, and it was getting worse very quickly.
He got back to work, only a short distance luckily, and got Ford to send someone to pick it up.
2 hours later, he got a call it was ready, and got a lift to pick it up.
They'd fixed it, but refused to tell him what was wrong.
He spoke to the service manager, and threatened to have the companies fleet serviced elsewhere.
Service manager finally crumbled, and admitted it was loose wheelnuts...

WOW - that is insane.
lucky your dad didnt have to drive a long way. could have been very messy!

I think my best bet is to go the dealer where i purchased the car, then i can make heaps of noise about it and hopefully get it fixed quickly.

as i said befor, the car runs fine - but its just pissing me off hearing the noise!

thanks for your responses to...

Check the heat sheild around the cat. Pretty common for these to start rattling. Easy to fix too. Just take it off. Doesn't make any difference to warranty or heat coming through the floor. 8-)

the noise sounds like its coming from the engine bay though.....
but i guess noises can travel anywhere in the car and fool a person?

Is it only when you first put your foot down or is it constant?

if the car didnt need the heat shields it would have them. mass produced cars are all about cost cutting...

when u say ford arent doing what they are meant to be doing, are they charging u for it at service? it adds a little under an hour to the service time of a turbo falcon to check them all...

Its consistant mate. Seems to get louder if going up a hill or putting strain on the motor but goes away when you take your foot off or are only applying a little preassure to the pedal...?
