Its crying out for forced induction.
Small motor in big engine bay = plenty of room for manifolds, turbo(s), plenums and assorted chrome bits.

Hey, don't knock the 221 motor. I sold one to a guy in South Australia about 15 years ago who wanted to put it into his Rod. He pulled out a 454 to put the 221 in. These motors came out in the '62 compacts with a 2 speed auto or 3 speed manual. Mine had a 2 speed auto and I wanted a bit more get up and go so that is the only reason I sold it. I replaced it with a 302 and a C4 3 speed auto but I found out from a mate who used to run Diablo motors in Lakemba that all I needed to do was to replace the 2 speed with a 3 speed auto or 4 speed manual and it would have done the job. They are light and rev out really well and all that is needed is to drop a 350 Holley in place of the standard Ford carby. So 104ord try the carby first, 350 maximum size and then tinker with extractors or a good dual system and then go to a good electronic dizzy and plugs. If you want some zip without the big bucks then that's the way to go. Cheers AU055

Replacing any Chev that's in a Ford with a Ford can only be a good thing. TPVM.

They have the same stroke as the 289.. Have smaller bore..
These engine where used in NZ stock cars with Westlake heads etc [From Dan Gurney fame]... The capacity for stock cars at the time was 3.6.. Now it's 4.0.. With Westlake heads, pistons, rods they would rev to 9,500 rpm.. They are the first of the Windsors.. Little brother to the 289 / 302.. Some fitted 3" / 302 cranks to help with torque.. From memory it was the 260 engine which was used the GT40... They are thin walled cast iron block like all the Windsors... Due the the size of this is why Ford never called the Falcon 221 6 cylinder a 221 ... They always reffered the 6 cyl as the 3.6...

Ford USA was using those little donks in a salt pan speed car ( Bonneville ). They had to use original wheel sizes, and stuff like that. It was a privateer in a Valiant with a slant 6 that beat them.....I read it in a Yanky car mag about 15 odd yrs ago.

Drop the twin 3" down to a twin 2", maybe even a twin 1.75". Also, what sort of $$$ to gain more power are you looking at spending.

its more of a cruiser at the moment.. im not chasing alot of power just maybe a lazy 220rwhp. the 3 inch exhaust on it at the moment sounds great and has the flame throwers plumbed into it.
ill probably look into diff gears and i wanted too look into gilmer drives just for the novelty

Over there, USA, they got 3 different size slants, 170, 198, 225. I remember something about the 225 and the 170......can't remember which engine he was using. You could order your Valiant with the 170 and a 4 barrel carby on it....the " Hyperpack ".

Unfortunately, due to it's displacement(or lack thereof) it ain't going to be a lazy 220rwhp.
I'd say use some AFR165's,Performer RPM air gap and a hyd roller conversion. You could go with a stroker but pistons will likely have to be custom so you may aswell just fit a 302. You'd want to bring your exhaust back to a 2 1/4" twin though. |
