Hey,

dont have one ... but looking seriously at getting one.

do the old 289's have much chop?. can you get much out of them
without opening the engine. im talking mild performance here not big hp
just with cams ect ect, just to bring it up to speed with modern driving.

its in a ZA fairlane that i dont own .... yet (touch wood , all planets allign ect ect)

Thanks
Ben

well, you have to open the engine up for cam, but all the basic mod stuff will be good - better intake cleaner, exhaust w/ headers, tune-up. could go as far as better heads or porting and RR's, and also better intake sys (holley) depending on what you got now.

the little 289's are a good engine and love to rev, but you gotta let 'em breath! just look at the XR GT. careful with going too big with cam, as you need torque to push that BIG ZF around. GT's were 4sp.

have a look at some US old school mustang sites

They're not too bad, but i'd be more inclined using a 302W bottom end and bolting the 289 heads onto it.
289 heads are hard to get now for that reason.
Without doing heads and cam them don't expect to gain much from bolt ons, they're a bit different to the newer cars.

Main thing with the old donks is the crappy gearing that comes with them, mate of mine has a 253 worked up sounds wild as but goes like a bag of crap because its got a 3 speed and crap diff behind it.

They have done some wonderful things in the states with the 289. They raced them in the under 5Litre class with 4V cleveland heads and race manifold, they were very very quick cars.

one of those manifolds would be like rocking horse crap to find tho, very rare but they are around.

with those they make a 351 look slow
