Yeah you should be able to. With a 3.23 diff and reving it to 5500rpm you will hit 144kph in 2nd.

This is not supposed to be a really mean thing to say...but why are so many people so obsessed with how fast thier car goes in first, second, third etc etc etc. (Unless of course you are talking about terminal speed of the vehicle which is a measure of performance).

You could get even faster out of it in second gear if you fitted a 2.75:1 centre, but your car would be slower off the mark and most likely slower at the top of the speedo as well.

It is sort of like those guys that say, "my stereo is so powerful that it distorts my 250w 6x9's!!!!" :roll: WTF?????

My stock as a rock manual XR8 will not even go close to 140k's in second gear, but I will bet it is faster in every regard than a three speed EA which will pull that sort of speed in second.

Still, whatever turns you on I 'spose.

And, sorry for that little monologue, but I have always wondered.

Yeah exactly, its all to do with gear ratios and rpm, not engine performance.

So a XR8 diff wont reach 140km+ in 2nd gear hmm looks like I'll be keeping the 3.23 diff :roll:

thing is though,if you change your diff you should theoreticly get to 140 quicker as the gears will rev out quicker

So you want to trade off acceleration for top end speed??

Getting a shorter diff ratio will give your car a lot more "punch".

So... although you might not reach 140km in 2nd gear, you will get to 140 a lot quicker (but it will be in 3rd)

BTW XR8's until EL series 2 ran 3.23 diffs, and as others have said upgrading ratio will mean quicker acceleration, who really cares what speed you can do in 2nd, its how quickly you can get there that matters.

Its all about the tyre speed when doing burnouts. Well that's the way I see it anyway.

Mine does 110 in 1st, but I'd rather it max out at 70! Standard diff sucks...

I guess that the only time a tall diff would be good for "performance" would be for NASCAR events or salt lake racing?

6000rpm with a 3.27 diff... not something I do every day mind you!

By the time you reach 140km/h, I should be doing 150+ and in 3rd. The 2nd gear in the autos is far too long, just goes on and on and on forever.
