Hello from across the ditch.
I'm in the process of sourcing an EFI 302 for a conversion into a Mk1 Capri and have found a pretty well-priced 1993 XR8 half cut. However, I've done some searching and have found a few examples of people saying they're rubbish motors. What makes them rubbish? What model should I be seeking an engine from? I don't have a huge amount to spend, so any later model variants are out of the question. Also, i have a T5 box for the conversion. Will i still be able to use the factory ECU if the donor car was an auto? Cheers, great site you have here. Bern |

there not a rubbish engine they are quite strong and reliable, its just in std form they are not much of a performer,( rubbish performance std) compared to the 6 cyl..

Cheers. Is that the case for all the early EFI windsors, being poor performers?
At the moment it has a 302W from a 70's model Falcon or similar. Retrofitting an injection kit is another option i've looked into, but seems like the internals on the old block might hold it back. |

They are a bit of a slug down low, But otherwise they are strong motors I've heard, like the I6 you can safely bolt a low boost setup on them and get some giggles.
Should be able to trick the ECU onto thinkin it's in neutral. Not too sure how but there's probably a thread about it in electrical or tech section.

Is the T5 box a V8 specific box? Six cylinder boxes require a fair bit of modification to fit.

Sweet, so they're not a bad conversion then I was mostly worried about reliability issues. Considering the capri must weigh in at around a tonne the XR8 motor should offer a decent amount of poke to have fun with.
The T5 was the factory option for a bunch of V8s and sixes over the years. Mine is from a VN Commodore. I think my main issue will be getting a bellhousing made up to suit the 302. Cheers |

I got hold of a commy box during my conversion parts gathering from what I saw the only difference is the input shaft being longer and the bellhousing different. (V8/V6/I6 all same box housing) Swap input shafts, bolt it to a ford V8 bellhousing and away you go...

Any Falcon 5.0 engine is a good thing. Only f**k wits think they are rubbish!
It was only the non-HO U.S engines that were slugs with only 165hp....HO's are 225hp. Even then they are still good building blocks for a much more powerful lightweight engine. You can still use an Auto EECIV to run yours with a manual. A Mate of mine has one in his Capri with Edelbrock heads, cobra intake and F303 cam through a Z-type T5 and 9" for 335hp at the treads with the EECIV. |

The HO engines don't feel all that bad with a T5 behind them. I've got a EB Xr8 5spd & Eb Ghia I6 5spd in my stable of cars. They do feel a little sluggish with an auto, but so does a stock 6 in a EA - ED falcon!

Bern The auto ecu will run it, but not properly. The EB-ED auto ecu's had torque truncation as the default in the absense of the TID signal. This will drop out around 12 degrees of spark advance at higher load levels. Idle control is also different between auto and manual so your coast and decelerate will behave slightly unexpectedly. Fuel control AFR targets are quite different in open loop. With the proper modifications the auto ecu can be made to work like a manual ecu which is really what you should use if you want optimal operation.

Will mount up a T56 from a commywhore and even got the housing made to retain the starter on the passengers side. The internet(and just cars magazine) is your friend. Hooroo |

Brilliant motor! I put 100,000kays on my last one and 50,000 on the one I have now. To be safe, replace the timing cover and water pump as they can corrode and dump all the coolant into the sump. Check the welsh plugs, remote mount or at least replace the ignition module, blank off the EGR then use a J3 to make the ECU work with the T5 and no EGR. Most EFI 5.0s I've seen have never even had a rocker cover removed! Its mainly the parts bolted to the motor that fail.
