Hey guys,
Driving a 1998 ELII XR8 and tweaked the cover the car came with. Acquired a new one, however, It is sons the HEX bolts / TORX screws (don't ask where the old ones got to). Anyway, wondering if any enthusiasts out there have the sizes/measurements of the bolts required to fit the cover, or even better. Ideas on where to obtain them. Cheers. |

id like to know as well.... torx screws were a s**t idea in my opinion, 2 of the heads on mine were rusted and as soon as i moved the torx bit on them, stripped the heads..... and i really needed to get to the top Rad hose, so i thought i could bend the cover back, not knowing at the time it was made of die-cast metal so i now have a small triangle of engine cover bolted to my manifold

Little Torx screws are #8 size, 32 thread, 5/8" long.
Hex Bolts are 1/4 UNS thread. Ive only got two, one is 1 3/4" long, the other is 1 3/16"

Why wouldnt you just drill out the heads of the torx screws? Rather than trying to bend and destroying the cover?

If your talking about the top engine cover. A tip for others that may come in handy is to get the torx bit and attach it to a socket and an extesion then tap it gently with a hammer so the torx bit bites the head even though it may be stripped. It eventually bites enough so you can undo it. Its worked for me multiple times after stripping those suckers. What was Ford thinking??

or you could drill them not quite enough as you're worried about damaging your nicely painted/ detailed cover - and still break it

the engine covers are only there because they made the poor little Windsor so freakin' ugly without it - they look crap otherwise

and if you do put the BBQ plate back on replace the torx bolts with hex bolts.

The engine covers are only there because they let a woman near it. They stuck a dress on it!
Ford U.S. had the right idea no poxy cover and just neat tidy hoses and wiring. Besides you get a longer lasting harness and less heat soak to boot! |

On the topic of engine covers.... how do the AU ones mount? I just painted up an AU XR8 one the same colour as my car, but still have the E series mounts. E series engine covers = ugly! Plus the AU one is all plastic so maybe less heat retention? I'm not too sure if i want to cover it up now though seeing as it has some MSD stuff that looks better than the s**t Grey factory parts. Although as Fairlane6970 said, it does have a s**t load of ugly wires and hoses everywhere!
