hi guys.

went to start the wagon yesterday, it started fine the first go, but then i turned it off and went to start it again, and it did the tiniest bit of a crank then stopped, and the (!) symbol came up on the dash.

i bashed the top of the dash while holding the key on start, and it cranked for a second then stopped again.... now i cant get it to crank

isnt this usually a BEM problem? or could it be something else?

i wouldnt have thought itd be the starter motor, although it has been cranking a bit slow on cold starts. i'll have a look anyway.

Sounds like an old, tired battery, this cold weather weather just accentuates the problem. See if another battery solves the problem.

Try the battery, if not consider the starter.

my wagon (V8) is currently hard to start.

dead cold it'll struggle, but it will start
once its heated up it will not start.
gets about 1 crank and then its like its got a dead battery.

jump start it and it fires easy.

a number of people are telling me it'll be the starter, they try to pull way too much voltage once heated up and the battery can't keep up.
Jump starting gives it a big voltage boost so it starts.

i just havn't had a chance to test their theory!

Mine was similar (DC) - not full battery = starter motor not pulling in properly. Solenoid might need a clean or something? - when its charged it kicks right on over.

Some cars (Lucas electronics) used to have issues starting with Low Volts Warm. Needed more than 12v while cranking to the ECU. many people replaced ECU's etc in Rover 3500 vitesse's when they just needed a battery

I have a brand spankers new starter for mine - dont want that problem to hang around

yeah i should throw the battery on charge, its only been driven twice in the past 3 months and started about 5 times and run for about 10 min each time.

i'll do that on the weekend and if it dosent fix the problem, i'll have a look at the starter motor.
