Hey guys,

Buying a ski boat this week. Couldn't pass up the price of $2,700 with rego'd trailer etc off a reli. Don't you just love drunken impulse purchases over Christmas lunch? Hehe.

Well here is the thing, it's got a 318 Chrysler in it. Just wondering if any of the v8 boys on here know much about this motor? And if it's a notorious POS or a pretty strong ol' thing. Had my uncle down from ACT over this week for christmas who builds hotrods and seems to thing they were a pretty decent motor. He'll check it out with me over the next few days.

Thanks for any input :)

the old chrysler small block is a very reliable and strong engine..
its pretty much the same block configuration as 273ci,318,340 and 360ci.
the only thing to look out for is corosion in the timing case from water cavitation.(same issue as fords 5.0)
to give you an idea...
i had one a few years back in the old valiant and i couldnt fault it.. never has any issues..
the original engine lasted from original 1969 to 2000
i brought a car and engine as a wreck from the original owners son who had been using it as a burn out car..lol i used the engine and fitted in my car and used it for 12 months before i had it re built to run lpg.
and at the stage of rebuild it had was a little smokey but otherwise was still smooth and quiet..
i sold the car in 2004 to a mate of mine and he still has the car, the engine is still as strong as it was when i sold it to him... :)

I'm not sure.. I was quite p****d when I had a look at it and pretty much spent most of the time sitting in the drivers seat making engine noises and steering around invisible logs and such. I was supposed to go take it out today for a run before payment but my uncle had to go away for a few days urgently so it may not happen for a few days. I shall look into it though :)

318ci and 360ci hemi 8's were the same motor basically but the 340ci is a different engine.

340 is supposedly the pick off the bunch but there are plenty of solid 318's and 360's out there :)

GO VALIANT!!!!

*ducks under a table*

318 was the workhorse and 360 was the same block usualy in luxury spec models. 340 was the best of the lot and was the high performance spec engine and was the base for the E55 which was to replace the E49 six pack. Like all chrysler/valiant engines, fill the oil check the petrol and they will go forever.

They werent Hemi's....

I doubt that the 318 would have J port heads too.

the LA small blocks are pretty much interchangable with most parts. 360 is a truck motor and have larger mains then the 318. 360's also copped externally balanced cranks.

Good motors with alot of potential, they came out with very low compressions (my 360 has 8.3 from factory :? ) but they are solid. Was enough to make a Jeep cherokee the fastest SUV in the world at one stage too!

If I remember, the 340 had a larger bore than the 360, the 360 had a longer stroke.
There are a few different 318's, depending on what they were once fitted to....cars, trucks, vans...
