Ok, I found this dude from USA who gave advice to another bloke who wanted idea's for a 351 Windsor Build. He said about stroking it to 385!? Not sure how the numbers crunch in this but maybe somebody else can work it out.. The Last post was in 2003 so I didnt bother replying there.
3.85" Crankshaft 351w Rods (stock) 302w Pistons (stock) With new main bearings and bolts, would this setup work? Also what is the idea with using 302w pistons? Cheers, Tim. |

The 302W pistons are used for the different pin height, which allows for the longer stroke.
Looking at the dimensions, 3.85 stroke, and 4.0 bore gives you 386.1 cubes. Brett

So does this setup actually work? and is it worth any power increase or just a head f*** to deal with? What I am looking for is a budget way of overhauling a 351w block to make it street capable in the 5k rpm range. If this setup is worth it, would I best off getting new 302w pistons to reduce piston weight?
Cheers, Tim. |

Quote: Yes, 351W block and rods, 302 pistons, and 3.85" crank = 393. Well, actually 387 with a stock bore, 393 at .030 over. Strokers build compression fast with big cubes, so pay attention to the piston style you use and your chamber CCs if it's for pump gas. Found this on another forum - {DESCRIPTION} Going from this guys Advice, Using GT40 Heads (60cc combustion chamber?) and a think but strong head gasket, compression wouldn't increase too much? Setup is N/A. |

The 393W is a well proven budget combination. It is the same cost to grind a factory 351W crank or buy a new 393W crank here in NZ. Watch compression ratio, do the maths before purchasing pistons. 302W pistons are available in many dish volumes. GT40 heads may be a bit restrictive though.

Quote: GT40 heads may be a bit restrictive though I can understand that the heads will restrict it, but is this just at higher rpm? like for say 5500rpm + for a good guestimation? I might do some more research on air flow with 393w, before I commit to that stroke. I am definately commited on the 351w and have found a good local Ftruck Wrecker who has a good donar block for 550$, this good for Just block? Or should I try elsewhere or bargain him down? Cheers, Tim. |

Intake port flow (in cfm) x 2 = approx max FWHP the heads can sustain.

5.0L pistons just happen to be the correct comp height for stock 351 rods and a 3.85" stroke crank, that's the reason behind that, it's a good low cost combo.
Get yourself some AFR 185's to go with it. |
