As the subject says:
I've been offered a 351W (Carbied not EFI) to fit into my NF Fairlane at a good price.
Are there any issues bolting this to the existing 4 spd auto, such as computer etc? (It comes with a C4, buit I'd rather use the 4spd)
I'm guessing I'm gonna have to EFI this engine...unless someone's got a way of tricking the computer so everything will run how it's supposed to. What EFI packages would I be looking at and rough costs to purchase? Bare in mind it's a stock 351w.
Cheers.

D.

I wouldn't, but there is no reason you couldn't leave the engine carbied. The auto transmission has it's own computer, the only proviso being you will need a TPS on your carby.

Cool, well that makes it easy then. I can at least run it like it is till I sort our efi and other mods. Any particular type of TPS I'm looking for? Could it be sourced of another vehicle 2nd-hand?

Sweeet! Yeah I can't wait either. Definitely going ahead now that I know it's not going to be a mission with computers and efi etc etc.

Haven't we just talked about this?
Anyway this pick shows the differences between 157 and 164 tooth flywheels and left and right hand starter locations. To use your existing BTR 4spd trans and it's 157t flexplate it will need to be rebalanced from the 5.0's 50oz imbalance to the 28oz required by the 351. See the counterweight size difference in the photo? Basically your BTR flexplate needs to have the same size counterweight as the 5.8.
The stuff at top is 5.0, stuff at bottom is 5.8;
Image
Otherwise get an early 289/302 157t flexplate from a C4 which already shares the 351's 28oz imbalance.
Use all the original 5.0 Electronics and harness and grab yourself an aftermarket EFI intake that suits the 351. Use the front cover/water pump and all accessories off the 5.0. 351W XR-Y type pacemaker headers fit but may not be big enough for your engine combo? In which case custom headers are the go.
Some other details of this are in my 351w into XE article above.

Pete.

Thanks very much Pete.
That's exactly the info I'm after.

Dan.

No wuckers Dan,

Actually I might have to update that info as it seems that the BTR does in fact use a 164t flexplate as opposed to the manual cars' 157t flywheel. A mate says he has bolted a Cleveland C4 up to his 5.0 using the original BTR flexplate. Once I've confirmed that it is indeed a large bell housing C4 that was used we will know for sure.

Cheers,
Pete.

Yeah . My origional 5.0 flexplate was 164 tooth. I just brought a scat flexplate for a clevo. I had to grind a little from the torque converter mounting blocks to fit it.

There we go. Now what this means of course is that you can use a BTR 5.0 block sandwich plate to allow the use of a 164T flywheel for manual 351 conversions where you really want an 11" clutch.

Cheers,
Pete.
