Stroke it! You can get a 390 out to about 460-odd cube quite easily with a Scat crank, etc. Edelbrock do a nice aluminium head and intake for the FE's as well. It all comes down to the almighty dollar. But if he can afford a '67 fastback, he can probably afford to do the motor properly...

I'm using a Scat stroker kit for 445ci, Edelbrock heads, Comp Hyd roller and Algon mech injection manifold converted for EFI. Basically like the first engine in this group.....

Edelbrock 60069 but they'll be ported. The carb version will be pretty much the same as the EFI version just a little less driveability and maybe not quite as much up top because of the individual runner intake I'm using.

Just had a read through this and couldn't let it slip. There is nohing wrong with 390 rods, they are a stout peice. The weak rods were on the smaller displacement FE,s. Can't remember exactly which ones without researching it but most likely 332, 352 & 360. Have a look at one next to a 302 rod, they are far superior. The only thing wrong with any of the FE rods in that length (390, 427, 428, 406, 410 all same length) is 40 year old metal fatigue.
