somtimes wont start in p put in n it starts

That's probably the switch that tells it whether it's in P or N and it thinks it isn't in P sometimes, could be from wear or an electrical problem.

As for the knocking, check the exhaust isn't rattling on something, mine used to do it until it warmed up.

on the the dash says p when in p if that makes any difference to that fault

no need for speacial tools.
just rocker covers off, mark where on the chain the little arrow is pointing to.

if its not just give the car a quick flick of the keys to get the markings up against the chain. unbolt the one that holds the phasor on, slip it off( very inportant to hold pressure on the chain in a upwards direction to make sure the chain doesnt come off the timing sprocket on the crank. if it does your fuked and timing cover has to come off. )
let the phasor drop down towards the motor and slide it off the chain and out.

put the new ones is just whacking them on. line up the mark on the sproket and the little locating pin on the back of the phasor and push it on. and yes it takes a bit of effort to get it onto the cam but its totally do-able, as i done mine.

then all back together and fire the biich up

yea it is easy,
you actually have to really stuff up to drop the chain off the crank sproket as its a V motor so it doesnt fall off the bottom it lays on the side.

i even took the inlet manifold off at the time and gave it a paint. there was about 2cm of dirt sitting in the valley  :? so cleared that out and all sweet.

just make sure when its all togeter the injectors are plugged into the fuel rail properly so you dont give the motor a fuel shower like i did   :P
