On one of the forward corners of the heads, no need to remove the rocker covers, is the number 4 cast if it is a 4v head, if it is a 2v head there is no casting number there.

4V heads arent really that special on the street..... better results can be had with porting the intake, fitting 4V valves and cleaning up the exhaust port a lil on a 2V head

are you sure they're genuine big port 4V heads?

late XB-XE clevelands all had 4 barrel carbies, but that doesnt make them 4V engines

wether 4V heads are better than modified 2V heads is a matter of opinion, some people dont like how 4V heads behave on the street, some people feel that a 2V is strangling the engine

in all honesty, 4V heads are suited more for high RPM racetrack work than low RPM street use

the problem with stock 4V's is that the port volume is HUGE, the intake charge will not reach a decent velocity until very high in the rev range, this is a problem with LPG as it falls out of suspension in the air very easily, leeding itself to a poor low rpm mixture, having a stage 1 cam and 4V heads on gas is totally mismatched IMO, swapping to a set of 2V's would see improvement(on the street) even if you kept the stage 1 cam, it may make slightly less peak power but it will feel heaps stronger and have more TQ lower down, LPG is good at making TQ. The 4V's really shine at high RPM but unless you have a GRA gas system the flow of fuel usually drops off after 4500rpm, thats why its mismatched, lack of fuel above 4500, small cam, HUGE heads.

If you really don't want to swap heads then just go for a larger camshaft and if its an auto get a 3000+ stall, I'd be looking at something to make power from 3500 and up, thats the only place those heads will work efficiently, but it will always come down to what you use the car for and how much you are willing to spend.

How does it perform now? does it have good economy? Tell us more details of what the car has in it, etc.

hey mate, thanks for the info. i was sorta looking at running it on fuel when i want it to really go, but on gas for economy. i heard somewhere that gas and fuel have different timing or something. ohh yeah it's a manual too forgot to add that earlier. i was looking at getting rid of the points and putting a electronic dizzy in there dunno if that would help, just an easy upgrade.

yeah i dont reall want to swap heads. is it a good idea running it on fuel instead of gas? can it do both properly?

post some pics of your LTD too mate :P

The name stage 1 means nothing in real terms, it is advertising hype, stating the duration, lift and lobe separation is the real world way of stating what cam you have.
One companies stage one can be closer to another companies stage two or be a totally different animal.
