I'm interested in anyone's opinions on what exhaust I should put on my NL Fairlane Ghia...it'll pry just confuse me more than what every exhaust shop has already done, but hey...I'm all ears ! Please don't mention Redback muffler anyone...yucky...but yeah here's a few things I'm wondering about. I want it loud...not truckish resonant loud, but sweet note loud. I want only a single Lukey, Mercury or Dynomax muffler (opinions please). I'm not replacing either the cats or the standard headers. I have no idea whether to put a 3" single system, 2.25" dual system, or 2.5" single...every exhaust shop has recommended different. I have only heard a few 2.5" single systems and they're not bad but I would like a little louder and different...will the 3" or 2.25" do this?

Hmmm... maybe a 2.5inch with one less muffler/resonator will give you the volume you are after?
3" is pretty hardcore - although having said this i can think of at least one stocky 5.0L i know with a 3" cat back and the sounds is... perfect.

My advice on that sort of car is a single stainless system. I had a single 3 inch stainless geenie flow system on my EF XR8 good note quiet on idle reasonably loud up high. all with standard extractors and cats.
but for a beasty old school note ive got a 2.5 inch twin system full seperate sides on my AU XR8 ute |

If your wanting the good ol V8 sound, go the twin 2.25" or if planning some future mods maybe twin 2.5".
Deff sounds the part and isnt droney. I personally have twin 2.25 and sounds great, couldnt imagine it any better.

If you want the old school V8 sound, go and buy a clevo...
As for what sounds best stock/mild 3" or twin 2.25" As for what flows best stock/mild 2.5", twin 2.25", 3" (off top of head...) |

Hi,i own a NF 5L fairlane.Ihave fitted PH4000 extractors and a 2.5 inch single exhaust with a hotdog which is dumped at the diff. Its not too loud and is alittle droany too.But i used to have just the standard system but got all the mufflers cut out and just put in a hotdog and sounded great.(Soon to be dual 2.5 inch system)
Well i suggest with a single 2.5 inch or 3 inch system with a straight through muffler (not offset or double offset) and no resonator.I think that would sound good on a stocky type engine.(If its too droany just get a hotdog put up close to the middle of the car, this helps lesson the droaning effect inside the cabin) But if your going for power upgrade to extractors and dual 2.5inch exhaust. Hope this helps..

Thats garbage. Muffler design and engine tune will have as much to do with sound as the diametre and configuration of the pipes... A nice big cam will do wonders for the sound of your car, even with the stock exhaust, not to mention it'll make a bit more power if you pick the right one. One day, I'd like to swap my cheap 3" single for dual 2.5" with some good mufflers for a better sound. Not sure how much more power would be there though? Probably 3/5th's of F**k all... |

sorry to tell ya this buddy but if you want a good note, extractors are the place to start. the rest of the exhaust can only modify what note is already there.

I agree with the 2 previous posts entirely!
Cam / extractors will help your note just as much as the rest and you dont need huge or what not Id prefer a non off the shelf system personally and this is what ive now opted for with nothing but fantastic results ad compliments.

I agree also
take a listen to my mates rebuilt vt LS1. forgies, huge cam, headwork, 2 7/8th inch extractors and twin 2.5" exhaust. Would put alot of old V8's to shame sorry to say it, it sounds nothing, i mean nothing like a new injected V8.

Extractors make her sound like a real V8.
2.5" is good up to 200rwkw. 3" you'll lose bottom end, and because it's bigger it will be dronier.

Bigger is Better! Here is an idea for you to toy with.
I have just modified the 5.0ltr standard headers with 3" collectors and tri flanges and put a dual straight thru 3" system (few mandrel bends), just cats and the turbo mufflers on the end of the pipes with removable baffles (ricie I know) and It dumps just before the diff. I know most dont like the idea of 3" BUT its sounds awsome, not to loud (with baffles) No drone and minimal restriction on exhaust flow . I am on a very strict budget so lets not forget that the whole system was less than $600 with all labour my own and I have never made one before now either. Happy hunting |
