G'Day all

New to the forum, glad to be here.

Have a continuing problem with my EF 5ltr, has not been starting on petrol and has just stopped running on gas, prior to this was running fine on gas but using quite alot of gas.
Thought it might have been air flow meter but have not got $300 to get a change over. Is there anything that can be suggested to help me get it going again, I am not a mechanics bum hole so have no idea what to do and I am on a pension so have next to no money. Need help desperatly PLEASE.

Thanks heaps
Johno

how old is the gas system? it may be the easiest to fix first.what type is it,can you name the brands used for the converter and other parts.

Not sure what type it is Hans, will get back to you on that.
Had the car for 5 yrs gas was in it when I bought it not sure when it went in.
Thoroughly cleaned air flow meter was full of junk, did nothing, still won't start

Thanks Johno

It's unlikely to be the MAF because although it's pivotal in load calculation, it has no bearing on LPG delivery. Even if the MAF has failed the ignition will still work, in fact even if the EEC has failed you will still get 10degree locked spark provide by the TFI module.
Your problem is most likely ignition related. The first thing to do then is pull a plug lead off and stick a screwdriver up it, lay it on the intake with about a 5mm gap and see if the spark jumps across when cranking?

Question: Is there any PETROL in the tank?

The reason I say this is that your LPG system requires petrol to start the car, before it automatically switches over to LPG.

Ah yes good point.
Also check that the LPG system cuts the fuelpump and the injector power when it switches over to gas. Sometimes the injectors and/or fuel pump have been killed due to the LPG system not switching off power to them while running.

Fair question,Yep 3/4 tank. Car was running fine on gas yesterday, has not been running on petrol for a couple of months. When petrol was working would get very bad pinging under load and no top end at all, would just cough and splatter. Same thing happened to my mates Landcruiser and turned put to be MAF, he changed it a fixed the prob so thats why I was wondering if my trouble was similar.

Thanks
Johno

Hey Hans,

System is all IMPCO Model L and is about 10 yrs old. I managed to get it started on gas with a jump start from my Patrol, but still won't run on petrol. Was told that it could be TFI and that the hall effect could go next and that I was best to replace the entirs dizzy set up, would this be the best way or not?

Thanks
Johno

try the tfi module first, about $60.i find the internal hall and pip gear to be reasonable,if you can get a second hand 6cyl. one it sould be ok.the impco converter can be rebuilt with a repair kit if the diapham is playing up.

If you got it to start on gas it won't be the ignition components. Gas is harder to ignite than petrol. Look at your fuel pump and/or injectors.

Ok I will look at injectors, as I removed the cover in the boot and heard the fuel pump working just the other week.

Thanks
Johno

change the in line filter first, then the injectors and or the pressure regulator, you cancheck the pressure at the valve on the front fuel rails.

OK here is where I am at, I have replaced the inline filter, was full of fuel and leaked all over me (yuck). There is no fuel at the front of the line and now it would appear that the fuel pump is not working  . I have made the decision to take it to a proffesional mechanic to see if they can work out the problem for me and get me going again, will have to hope he will let me pay him off or something.
Anyway I would like to thank each and every one of you that gave me excellent advice and persisted with me through my problem.

THIS FORUM ROCKS!!!! :D :D

I have also decided to put the car up for sale in the near future after I have sorted out this problem. Will put up a post on here as soon as I am ready.

Once again THANK YOU for your help.

Johno

Good stuff, thought it may be on the petrol side of things.

Could you let us know how much it costs you to get a new pump put it (specifically labor costs)

Also, new fuel pumps replacement kits can be found on eBay for around $70-80, but they are no name OEM's. I believe the bosch ones are in the 2-300 price range.
