I was wondering if the Ghia has an XR8 motor in it.
I've read some places say its 170kw and others say its 165kw. I'm not sure which. I've just got the car so I'm not that cluey with V8s. |

Oh no my friend, put away your hopeful yearning for the higher output motor and be satisfied with the standard 165fwkw beastie which came in all EL Ghia's.

The Ghia uses the same motor, computer and trans computer as the XR8 - the only difference is exhaust system.

Shane Thanks Mr Landau I thought that was the case. I'll get better figures when I change the exhaust. |

Shane This was the only difference between XR8 and the 'rest of us' wasnt it shane? From what I can tell, XR8 is the only manual V8 ECU available but i wouldnt think there'd be much difference between the timing/fuelling of an XR8/non-XR8 ECU?

Yeah, I personally think that XR8 owners got f**k over. You would have expected a greater difference in power. 5fwkw would make f**k all difference over the quatre I would imagine

Except for latter models there isn't any differene in 5 lte engines..Except for exhaust, manual trans on some, body kit and badges...OHh and in some cases lower final drive...

Thta's what he's still saying.... they're all the same really, even the XR8 motor is the same as the rest our ours but with a freer flowing exhaust which sees the extra 5kw.

The motors were the same across the board until you came to the ELXR8 2 which had the Explorer manifold on it. The rest of us all got the same HO motor which was fitted to the Thunderbirds from what I can gather (all fitted with 94/94 front timing case covers) - Falcon to XR8. Obviously the Sprints / GT's / Fairlane by Tickford had a few more toys.
I have some paperwork here that shows the Trans computer (TCM) and EEC modules are the same between XR8 and Ghia. The real difference between the two was the free flowing exhaust system on the XR8 (the Fairmont Ghia had to be quiet to appease those people who were after powerfull luxury).. As far as performance wise goes - the XR8's were left out in the cold. It took them till the EL series 2 to give them the same gear ratio as the XR6. And the same model until they got a decent manifold and extractors....But they still suffered with E7 heads. In retrospect - Ford was happy to tell you the XR6 was as fast because if we all purchased V8's they would have to import more motors rather than the local build the I6 got - hence more development was undertaken on them. It was up to Tickford to play with the V8's and the ones they did were limited numbers and out of reach of most normal people. my 2c worth anyway. Shane

Get a good exhaust system. The ones Mick Webb is selling on Ebay are good for 25kw according to him as long as its not an XR then its only 15kw.
Apart from exhaust and intake I dont know how much internal mods would be. I reckon pretty pricey. I would mind ported heads and bigger valves and a slightly more aggressive cam. But even that would head up towards $5000 I reckon, if your not doing it yourself that is. I wouldnt be. Why is that Gaz have you bought something your not telling us?? |
