Hi All,
First time post and hoping someone out there has come across this, I have a 99 AU1 XR8, just recently spent $2500 fixing up the suspension and putting a new 3" Stainless Exhaust on it, the car for some time and ended up with stale fuel. The problem i'm having is, if it's early in the day the car runs ok, has a few misses but generally performs well, but in the middle of the day or afternoon when driving at 100k/mh and going to overtake, you give it a little extra gas and it dies, coughs and splutters and eventually have to pull over while it stalls, at first I thought it was just the stale fuel, ran the tank empty and replaced the fuel filter and then refilled with premium, the problem still occurs when it's hot, not the engine the temperature outside. It runs as if either starving for fuel or flooding, haven't determined which it is yet, but when this happens it goes through a s**t load fuel in no time at all. My next step was looking at pulling the injectors off and cleaning them but I don't think that's going to solve the problem, has anyone had a similar problem? Thanks in advance |

Check the fuel pressure and flow rate. Sounds like a dodgy fuel pump.

probably didn't help that you ran the fuel tank dry. not good for the fuel pump

Higher ambient temps make fuel pump problems worse so, it's sounds like the pump alright.

Thanks for the replies but tried that, the fuel pump is OK. I didn't run the tank dry either, I drained the tank and flushed with 20 litres of Premium.
I had a mate look at it today who is a mechanic, we're going to pull the throttle body apart and clean it, reset the ECU and reset the TCC voltages, he thinks it's just the change in exhaust combined with the stale fuel which has caused the ECU to think it's in throttle mode all the time. I'll let you know how the clean and reset goes. |

is it possible for the oxy sensors to br effected from crap fuel ie; end up looking like a 2 stroke spark plug running rich as hell? if theres a dodgy sensor can it effect the air/fuel readings in any way?

There are a couple of other pissabolities with the information we know about your vehicle;
If the HEGO's are further away from the engine than they were on the stock headers you can get problems associated with exhaust pulse delay. Usually this results mainly in idle problems though. A reset(ie disconnect the battery for a while) can improve the situation. Have you left the IAT sensor unplugged or hanging out of the inlet tube?....This will cause lean running if the sensor is hanging out of the tube and of course incorrect fuel compensation for temp. I've seen cases where the wiring has been damaged by exhaust shops too so check both HEGO wiring and IAT wiring. I don't understand your statements about TCC and throttle mode? 67RCE is correct about the WOT situation. However if yours is doing this without hitting WOT then one of the above may be the cause. Has your mechanic done a self test? |

Hi all,
OK, Fuel pump was a little sluggish, had become a little clogged with the stale fuel, after a cleanup it now performs a 100% but still not the cause of the problem. The main cause of the problem was the return hose for the radiator header tank was leaking at the top radiator hose, at high ambient temps it was spraying a fine mist directly at the headers and I found two shorting as a result. So after fixing the short and checking the return hose closely, it fell off in my hand, instead of paying the exhorbitant price for a new top radiator hose I bought an air hose joiner and used it, cost me a total of $5. The problem has now ceased but I am still going through too much fuel! Did some testing and probably going to invest in a new TPS as the voltage on the TPS is at 1.05 volts instead of .98-.99 as I have been told it should be, my TPS doesn't have adjustments so you can't adjust it to change the voltage, can anyone confirm what the voltage on the TPS should be for the 99 5litre XR8 and does anyone else have a similar TPS and what are your voltages? |

XR9UTE, no he hadn't done a self test, and that was one of my concerns, he has since gone back south, im in NQ so a little too far to go to, im going to get a local mechanic who seems ok to do the self test and check the TPS. I haven't done a reset yet as I waiting on checking the TPS first.
The choking problem is completely fixed it's now just the rich running which is the problem. |

Check the sticky in the V8 forum on how to adjust your TPS. It can be done, but you need a drill to elongate the holes to allow it to move.
