hello,
i am in a bit of a pickle as to if i should do up my 6cyl or convert to a V8, so far the v8 is winning. "if" i go the v8 route i will probably get a wrecked ef ghia V8 so i get interior and diff with it. is there anything that needs changing to fit the eight motor in the six's bay? thanks for any help. |

I'm not trying to start a s**t please people, but RUSHED, your 6 is as fast as a stock 5.0 litre V8 as it is now. If you tip a little bit of cash into your 6, you'll end up with a car which is not only a hell of a lot faster, but it'll use less petrol. Won't sound anywhere near as good though... A cat back exhaust and a mild cam is all it takes to bring these 4.0 litre motors to life and with those simple mods, you could very well be staring down the barrel of 130-140 rwk...All for less than the price of the V8 conversion. But, it's up to you mate. If it were me and I was keen for a V8, I'd hunt hard for an EL2 XR8 manual... |

you'l have to move the whole dashboard back about half n inch to fit it in.. and you'l need to swap your rear rims over from left to right n vice versa coz the v8 spins the other way n otherwise u'l go backwards.. either that or a new diff, but swapping rims over is cheaper.
oh yeh you'l need new tail lights.. the v8 ones have different plugs. disclaimer: the above is not true.

I've found my 5.0 is just as economical as my 6... and no matter how much you spend on a 6, it'll never sound like an 8. When you put your foot down in the 8, it just seems to do it so easy, the 6 is just as quick but feels like you're pulling the a*** out of it in comparison. |

If you set the car up right the V8 is more economical than the 6 cyl. I've got a 220kw TS eng, thru a EL box to a 3.23 diff, and it's a little more thirsty around town, (is a V8 so I use the throttle a little more) but the highway has improved by a good 100k's per tank (more on longer trips).

I can understand where your coming from mate. If you had of said it about a Commie V6 and V8, I would have definantly agreed... V8's do "feel" better. But I'll be dead set honest here, my straight six, with the current mods, isn't far off from the "feel" of a V8. It's just the throbbing exhaust and the off-idle grunt the does it. But yeah, NOTHING beats the sound of a good V8. Except maybe a V10 (the Vipers exhaust note is to die for ) |

My EB V8 is more economical than my last car, which was a turbo corolla.
I have owned both a 6 and an 8, and it is hard for me to say which used less fuel... very close id say. Up to you in the end though... ask yourself what you really want and then do the pro & con thing. good luck Pat |

all these points are valid for a 6 vs 8 arguement..
but im sorry it doesnt justify the conversion hassles.. buy a v8 falc n start there. the money saved on conversion(coz ul sell your 6) will pay for a few mods n stuff

Rushed....does that mean too rushed to do a search on what has been discussed so many times it's ridiculous?!
Bottom line.....stick a 351 in it! |

Rushed, if you intend to do a conversion then consider getting a AU XR8 motor with all the good bits on it instead of a stock 165kw motor that all the E-series V8's had. The reason being it will save you a lot of money if you don't have to swap all the restrictive pieces on a 165kw motor for all the better pieces on a AU XR8 motor. In the long run - the money you save can easily go toward other perfomance enhancing items.
Or as Pete said, build a 351W and slip that in instead!

yeah, thanks for the advice people, its what i was after.
im not sure what ill choose as yet, the v8 or the 6 1. 6 cyl, new ported head, rpd stg2, lsd, possibly an au block 2. buy a v8 wreck, was wanting an ef series, cos idd also get all parts for conversion, diff, interior, and sell parts to recover some costs. bad point is insuarance (p-plater). i have a gas kit that i would use for this option. so a non-ef wouldnt be as usefull. which of the options do you guys think i should choose. p.s. good on ya clampy. thanks Rushed. |

I agree, if you want a V8, just buy one. Alot easier than a conversion...
And sell your 6cyl to fund the v8 mods |
