I have just recently purchased a EL Fairmont Ghia 5.0l build date 10/97.

Firstly I would like to know if this model V8 came out with the 185kw engine or the 175kw or was it only in the XR8's?

is the build date a series 1 or 2 EL?

and am I able to bolt a explorer manifold the the standard heads or do they need to be upgraded?

Cheers.

sorry if this has been answered before, I did do a search and couldn't seem to find the answers I was after.

Considering the Au's come along in 98, wouldn't this car be a series 2 car?

Take a look at the back of the cylinder heads, does it have GTP stamped/cast on them? Take a look at the intake manifold, it should be easy to identify which one it has - post up a couple of pics.

Cheers

From this angle it looks like a stock HO (asthmatic 165kw) intake manifold. Got a pic from the other side?

Cheers

I believe it's just the EL2 XR8's which got the upgrades (FBT and GT excepted, of course).

It's definitely the HO manifold and no doubt you'll have the E7 heads.

185kw XR8's had E7 heads and Explorer manifolds.

Different Cam (IIRC) and EL GT headers.

Pretty sure it was only the explorer intake and headers they had? Everything else was the same, same maf, same T/B, same injectors etc.

And I'm also 99.9% sure it was only the last of the EL XR8's that got the upgrades, so 98'ish?

According to the NGK spark plug catalog the 185 was released in the EL from 10/97.

Yeah, you need the top and bottom, as the ports are different to the HO's
