Well I'm a noob to v8's.. I sold my turbocharged 2L pinto for good $$ and have no bought a 5.0L windsor for my capri.
unfortunately I have semi stripped it down and it's full of crud like I've never seen before and it has a crank end float of 2mm and the bearings are shot. so it has to be rebuilt. If I'm going to the trouble then of course I want more power. I'm not after nuts power, but I want to aim for around 300hp which should be alright in my 1000kg capri. At first I was going to go for a 347 stroker kit. But from reading around here it seems this is useless with stock heads etc. Perhaps I'm better off just doing a straight rebuild and saving the $ for intake and heads? My real question is: How strong are the factory pistons and rods in the 5.0L Efi V8 windsors? cheers |

That depends.....which 5.0 have you got?
Pre mid '92 the 5.0 HO engine had forged pistons as std. If it's a non-HO engine(note; all Falcons used the HO engine as a base) they had rubbish dished cast pistons and after mid '92 the HO engine had cast hypereutectic pistons. Rods and crank are all the same. When you have your rods resized get ARP bolts for them and you'll be fine. Oh and certainly go straight for a set of alloy heads and aftermarket intake. My mate Scott has a Capri with a rebuit 5.0 HO bottom end with stock Edelbrock 1.90 valve performer heads,Ported Cobra intake, 65mm t-body, custom 1 5/8" headers, 2 1/4" dual exhaust, F303 cam,24lb injectors,Cobra 70mm MAF and TwEECer. Makes 305rwhp. Pete. |

I actually have no idea what year it was out of the car when I got it.
It's got the roller cam and the double timing chain.. and unusually the alternator in mounted on the passanger side. How can I find out what model HO it is? big difference if it's got forged pistons! |

Yikes, Passenger side Alt sounds ominous....could be a non-HO Crown Vic or T-bird engine. First check the T-body size, 58mm = HO, 45mm(or something ridiculous like that) is non-HO. Take the plenum plate off the intake it should have HO cast into the top of the intake.
If it has ignition leads on it check the firing order. 13726548 is HO, 15426378 is non-HO. Pete. |

crap... doesn't look like an HO then.. as the TB is tiny.. the mouth is about 65mm but the actual butterfly is probably around 45mm or something redicilous. Couldn't find any HO stamps
just these numbers on the intake: RFE68E 9K481 06 Ford 0330891 29 E7Te CA S So if it's not an HO does that mean the rods and pistons will be s**t? here is a pic: |

That's not a HO as suspected. I can see it has grey 14lb/hr injectors(HO has yellow 19lb/hr). The cast headers give it away also...HO's have tubular shorty headers.
The pistons are s**t but the rods crank and block are all the same as HO. The upper intake is also not very good because of the tiny t-body opening but that's probably a moot point because you're going to give it the heave ho anyway. Pete. |

what are the injectors good for? yeah I have a 65mm throttlebod to put on it. And I'm runinning no p/steer, air injection or a/c pumps. Got some pacemakers and I'll guess I'll track down some decent pistons then.
forged or hypotectic? how strong are the rods? I want to build the bottom end to handle 400hp. Last edited by JT on Fri Jan 05, 2007 3:54 pm, edited 1 time in total. |

Bout 200hp if your lucky. Non HO engines only make 165hp, HO's make 225hp. Pete. |

Is that what was used in the mid 80's F series when they went injected Windsor?

ok so what do I need to replace in the block to make it good for 400hp?

From memory the pistons won't have valve pockets in them... So any decent cam can't be fitted.. this Is a map engine.. If you change pistons, heads, inlet, etc you'll get there.. Personally I'd fit some "I" beam rods while its apart... The rotating assembly is quite strong if rpm is kept under 6000 rpm...
But you won't be able to if it has no valve relifes due to having to run very mild cam.. BTW H.o engines had .444 valve lift with 1.6 rockers..

Pistons and ARP bolts in your rods. Otherwise some aftermarket rods. My mate Scott has the Ford racing Boss 302 style rods which have 3/8" bolts instead of 5/16" but I don't think they do them anymore. They only do the 5.4" version now I think. You could use them and do a long rod 302...I believe Probe do a piston for that. The rest of the bottom end will be fine. Walker; The F-series used a better dual plane intake(actually the best intake...but very high), flat tappet cam, 19's and Speed density( bank fired)...the rest is the same. They were rated at 210hp but made lots of bottom end torque. Around '94 they went MAF and got the HO roller cam too. Pete. |

I'll see if I can get some +30 forged dish pistons and I beam rods then.
