{USERNAME} wrote: EGR really doesn't affect performance at all as it is only active on very light throttle application. The only performance advantage it has it that if you use a phenolic heat spacer betweent he upper and lower manifold, and completely remove the EGR system, then the manifold will run slightly cooler therefore the intake charge will be slightly cooler.
Some people who remove the EGR will experience pinging mainly because the cylinders run hotter. To counteract this without reprograming the EEC, you should be able to just back the timing off a degree or two. hi "EGR really doesn't affect performance at all ' u sure about that ?? remember ur filling the cylinder with worthless gas that doesn't help in the big bang theory . where u could of had some fresh air and fuel occupying that space that will increase cylinder pressures and make more power number one thing to do is get more air and fuel into ur cylinders for more squeeze so i beg to differ about " EGR really doesn't affect performance at all " cheers

Yep you are correct if the EGR was open under load (which I think it does on older carby and early EFI engines), but the EECIV/V only uses EGR when crusing or very light throttle, as soon as you accelerate it turns off so you don't loose any power/performance. |

OK , i cant remember when the ECU switchs on the EGR purgeing but i thick its some where near 2500rpm light throttle cruise but even then its robbing u of power just being pick LOL sorry cheers

Vic was selling a cobra, if it is a cobra, then it has inbuilt EGR

just being pick LOL sorry Yeah I know its, but they way I understand it is that it doesn't really cost you performance, it just limits the max power that you could get which is negated by the fact that it turns off when you accelerate (as soon as you need that power). And yeah its being picky but I think it can be validly argued from both sides. I the end on a computer controlled EGR system I don't think performance should be a reason to remove the EGR, those advocating that usually come from a carby background where pollution control did cause performance issues. And yes it turns off above 2500rpm or around 50% load (which equates to medium light accleration). |

so is it worth spending another $150 / $200 to get the EGR spacer to suit the Edlebrock manifold & throttle body, or just leave it.....or can the stock EGR plate be used with the edlebrocl gear

Stock EGR plate can be used with the Edelbrock, but just beware that the stock EGR is designed for the stock 60mm TB. If you plan to upgrade the TB then you should really either port the spacer or replace it with a larger one.
Personally if I had the choice I would prefer to run EGR, just to keep emissions down and increase the fuel economy. But if I was in the position to move from an HO with EGR to an explorer or aftermarket manifold without EGR, then I would do the swap. The increase you will get from getting rid of the HO will more than make up for any negative effects of removing the EGR, at worst you will have to decrease the timing a touch but you will still end up with more overall power. |
