Hey Guys,
Just curious what the differences is between the AFR (Non) Emissions legal heads. Is it to do with EGR?

If that gets rid of EGR than thats a step in the right direction.
I guess you would have to change the lower (and upper) manifold as well? Can you buy the non-emissions here how much? AFR 185s with 61cc chambers would do me fine. What manifolds would you use with them? |

EGR isn't generally bad for perfromance although it does tend to heat up the intake manifold a bit quiker than normal. It actually helps the engine plus emissions. Personally I would not run non-EGR equiped heads just in case you have to go through emissions testing, I doubt you would be able to pass without it. If you run a tweecer (or probably aftermarket EECs) you can then just turn the EGR off with that and if you have to go through testing turn it back on. |

My concern was mainly the temp of the manifold. I know that the air moves very quick through there and doesnt have much time to heat up, but its an odd concept
a) recycling exhaust gases and b) having an inlet manifold which is scorching hot I guess i've spent too much time on the 6's I plan to use a 3/8 spacer on the cobra manifold, so it would be nice to keep it all as cool as possible.

Yes its a strange concept that recycling hot exhaust gases back through the intake actually coold the conbustion temps and lowers emissions but it works quite well. IMO the intake probably doesn't stay any cooler in the long run unless you run a heat spacer because even if the EGR isn't working, the intake will still heat up to the normal engien temp anyway. Still I run a 1/2" heat spacer and turn the EGR off via the tweecer.

You dont need to do anything to the manifold to make it fit the non-emission heads. The only difference is that they have no heat riser holes, so the egr holes on the manifold are blanked off by the heads.
I think you'll run out of puff with the GT40 on a 347 and not make full use of the 185's. If your after that mid range, maybe the 165's would be a better option (unless your planning on up grading again later) save you having to knotch your slugs as well.

I've already got the cobra manifold, so I'll give it a whirl and see how it goes. Everything which i've read points to these manifolds for being excellent for low down torque, I realise my combo will probably run out of puff by 5500, but its just a pure street car. If I have to upgrade, i'd probably go with the true GT-40 tubular manifold.. even more of a torque monster.
