I was reading an article in street machine about a 347 stroker ef/el running 12.7 QM that was about to modify a air pump of a F100 as a vacuum pump. In a nother article it says a vacuum pump on a 400hp 308 is generally worth 15-20 hp. Does anyone no about vacuum pumps or the air pump.

I'm not too sure about what they exacty do, but when I had my 93 Mustang it had an air pump on it. I was under the impression it was another pollution control thing from the states.
If it is something to improve performance, I haven't seen any "replacement" ones in any Jegg's, or Summit Racing catalogues. It could be worth looking into.

If it's the one i'm thinking about it sucks teh air and other gases out of the crankcase, reduces oil misting and turbulance, both of which rob power as the crank fights through them.

Not big enough and they don't like oil going through them..This has been covered on www.turbomustangs.com often..
There are vacuum pumps for this but $800 is alittle rich.. I think the Mazda RX8 have electric vacuum pump on the rotory...

Yes the pump you refer to is used to pump air into the exhaust ports. This effectively allows the combustion process to continue in the exhaust manifold for emissions purposes. This is known as Thermactor emissions control or secondary air. The U.S. version of our 5.0L uses the same pump as the F-series.
Our 5.0L car engines did not have it because our emissions standards are much lower than the U.S. In it's place(below the alternator) is an idler pulley. This same pump is sold in the Ford racing catalog as crankcase evacuator. Pete. |

Street machine says to use a vacuum pump of a toyota 18R but not sure how you would use one with the factory belt. Also they state that the aftermarket ones pulls to much vacuum which is only good for engines built to use one.

mm i remeber that article
it aint a simple job to add a vacum pump as the whole engine needs to be sealed ie dipstick etc not a bad mod for say 20+hp at the fly
