I didn't know which section to put this in, so figured that it bolts on to a V8 so I'll stick it here.

I need a new alternator! How many amps does the stocko run and where can I go to find a decent one with a bit more juice. Anyone have any recommendations on type and how many amps I should go?

Chad

I've had a couple of quotes for alternators and they definately not cheap. One of the auto sparkies I went to has told me that the alternator is fine, it's the underdrives that's causing the problem. The alternator switches on at "x" amount of revs apparently and with the underdrives at idle, it doesn't reach those revs.

When I rev it up to about 900 - 1000rpm at idle, the voltage rises again, which makes sense as far as what that dude told me. But as far as I know, people are running underdrives with no problem at standard idle. My idle has been bumped up to 800 or 850 and still having problems.

mine was doing the same thing at idle, volts would drop heaps when ideling at bout 700rpm but bring revs upto 850-900rpm and it was fine so i suspected it was my battery so i replaced it and havent had any more probs since. only time volts drop at idle now is when she at normal operating temp and the thermos come on but once the car gets over 20km or so the thermos turn off and volts come back up. the lowest i see on the volt guage now is just above 12-12.5volts at idle with fans going and ive had this battery for 6 months or so with no probs, touch wood :)
