Hi guys, ive got an AU fairlane ghia, it's just basic 5ltr with tuned length pacemakers hi flow cats and a dual 3" into single 3" just before diff and out. I'm going to bulid a blown stroker for it and just wanted some advice. I've got an injected 302 out of an EB XR8 that i had that got defected so i took the engine and gearbox out and there sitting in the shed. Gearbox is T5. Firstly is there any difference in the cylinder heads between the engines? I'm thinking i'll build the eb engine and just swap it over when all is done. Is it a pain in the a*** to convert it to manual? Is the bell housing the same if i was to locate a T56, and should i persist with the factory injection or go for something else? Id like to keep it under 15 grand so my wife doesn't spew to much. I'll be using a RAPTOR supercharger kit that i've seen on this website they seem really good value for money. Id appreciate all input, cheers, Wooly.

im 99% sure all E-series V8's were the same as AU ones (exception is the AUIII XR8)
i cheap way to gain power is the GT40p heads
Converting it over to a T5 should be very easy if you have a full T5 and clutch and all the stuff you need like a manual ecu (prob easier to J3 chip it as youll prob need this for the supercharger anyway)
T56 is a expensive option (contact malwood they can set you up)
id stick if factory injection otherwise youll have to get it engineered and emission tested and you want to keep engineering to a minimum

if you get it supercharged youll have to get it all engineered if you want it to be legal and insurable
some engineers get you to get it emission tested some wont if you use the J3 chip if you get a aftermarket computer and supercharger you have to get it emission tested

IMO: Put the Raptor on the AU motor as is.
get the existing ECU tuned to suit, and enjoy a nice power bump.

Once thats done, re-evaluate.

If you want more, THEN look at building a stroker motor.

I'd hate to be negative but i see the following problems:

Your late model 302 bottom end will explode with if it is stroked and supercharged so you need an aftermarket block.

The heads and intake manifold on the EB motor are rubbish and aren't worth spending money on.

The T5 box out of a E-Series wont line up to the hole in the floor on the AU (gear stick will be poking up below the ashtray).

If I were you, i'd just strap the blower on the side of your existing AU motor (which is far better than the one out of the EB) and be satisfied. Might be worth changing the cam too before you get it tuned as the 175kw cam is rubbish.

ok, cheers guys, i'm pulling it down just before christmas to paint it so i'll go through the motor then, reckon i'll just freshen it and strap the blower on till i get bored. I'm starting my own business here in adelaide doing restorations and custom paintwork, i've been painting 22 years i'll be working out of an existing panelshop, The Fairlane will be a nice black pearl with a maybe 2 to 3 shade lighter two tone through the bottom with the same coloured 19" rims similar to whats on the current GT's. I'll put pics up as we go. If anyone wants any work done we do an excellent job, only use Glasurit paint and i have one of the best panel beaters in the country. Cheers for your help, it should be finished just after christmas for all to see. Cheers, Wooly.

I'm 100% sure your speaking s**t. ALL AU V8's got GT40P's and Explorer manifolds. Cam's are different, headers etc.

An EB V8 T5 will not work, the shifter location is too far forward. You need either an AU V8 box, or a T56 (yes, MWA, Yes expensive).

Elaborate please. This is entirely dependant on where the OP lives. Here in QLD, we have no need for emissions testing, etc. Engineering is a simply get a mod plate for $80-100 or so.

As I have said before, please do not post technical advice unless you are completely certain of what you are saying.

im not a AU V8 specialist mate just posting what i know from E series V8's assuming its the same as 6cyls are through e and a series with power figures and i never said i was certain so dont get your knickers in a knot

i dont know the rules in SA or QLD about engineering but i know in NSW its expensive and a b**ch and in NSW if you get a supercharged car engineered for $80 it was done very dodge and isnt really engineered you might be able to get some rims engineered for $80 in NSW but that would be it so again dont get your knickers in a knot

Sorry to burst your bubble but E and A series have different heads/cams/boxes in 6 cylinders also....

i know EF EL & au have same power specs but i know they have different cams etc due to different rods etc but the same power figure dont believe me look it up mate
you can get a the BTR from EF EL to AU so i cant see why T5 would be much different

You obviously have no idea that an AU T5 is roughly 100mm longer than an E series. Please, tech advice from members who have knowledge of what they are talking about, not going off half C**k on what they think it should be.

Brett has already outlined the difference in box.

But yes, they have the same quoted power figure. Pat on the back.

Back O/T, strap the blower to it and build another engine while "getting bored". Just keep in mind what you realistically intend on doing down the track to avoid having to fork out for another charger later.

thanks eveyone, seems to be some knickers getting tied in knots. I heard a while ago that the engines we're notably different that's why i asked, so if i have it right the A series engine has the explorer manifold which you can see anyway it's totally different to engine in shed, A series has GT40p cylinder heads, the T5 which is crap gearbox anyway is 100mm to short an won't fit so i'll go T56 from mal wood, i'll need to use a dart block or similar to charge and stroke? OK i'm onto it from today i'll let you know how the build is progressing. Thanks guys. A couple of you who seem to know there s**t i'll be in contact with. Cheers agian. Wooly.

not all A series V8's have the GT40P heads. Only some V8's.

You will need to source some for your own engine if you don't have any.

Also since you have a spare $15K lying around why not stroke the AU V8 from 5.0L to 5.7L.

A stroker 5.7L with a slight decompression & the raptor S/C should see you some very impressive figures on the dyno & also down the straight, around the track or even in your hood.
