Does anyone know how much space there is between the top of the Windsor 5.0L Explorer intake manifold and the bonnet?

if its a low series or xr bonnet its about 15mm.... I have a 10mm phenolic spacer on the explorer manifold and the tps screw has rubbed through the liner but just misses the bonnet..

Thanks Troy. Yes, I was going to send you a PM but thought the answer might be useful for others on here.
The Performance Products Typhoon manifold, I've got, is about 10mm higher than the Explorer and I was planning to put a phenolic spacer under it. Looks like that's not going to work.

You could look at an XR bonnet with a Bulge.

Just stick a reverse cowl on and be done with it
Another option would be to mill down the upper/lower intake to get the required height. Just make sure that there is enough thread engagement for the upper to lower bolts and that the upper clears your fuel rails and/or rocker covers. |

I might see what the cost is for machining the upper and lower manifolds. The missus is a bit at the $3k I spent on the partial engine rebuild so far ... I'll keep the steel bonnet bulge option open though.

Of course there is no advantage of the Typhoon intake over the Explorer one.

In the US forums, some guys say the same thing and others say they picked up some power over 3000 rpm. So would it be better to just do some porting or port matching on the Explorer lower? I read somewhere that the Explorer runners for #1, #5 and #8 need to be straightened up.

I did some port matching on a explorer lower to match the trickflow heads and to be honest I think I went backward, while it seemed to pick up a touch of go over 5500rpm it felt like it lost a lot under 3500rpm, after some forum surfing and reading I think I might have caused a low pressure or a open area where it lost air velocity..
so as of tonight actually, I have re fitted the std un molested explorer lower.. |

The lower responds really well to porting but easy to go backwards. Tom Moss has a porting guide for the Explorer on eectuning.org. He's a pro with them.

I was undecided about the Typhoon to start with so I'm going with the Explorer manifold, and getting the lower port matched by the machine shop. Should look nice with a new coat of paint.
