wondering on the mileage vs reliability on the AU's v8's...i'm soon going to a new car, thought about going to b-series...but i do like the AU, and i've learned an awful lot in my time as an AU owner
I know the Au's I6 is rock solid & run basically forever...but i have no personal experience with the 8's. are they as reliable going into the big kms? the I6 is good, just a bit sluggish now i have got used to it's power...a little bit more would be nice, the V8 noise would be nice too...lol i'm finding a new car primarily to gain a manual tranny, i'm sick of the Auto...go for a bigger engine while i get a manual. ...thanks in advance |

more reliable in my experience.
only major 5L specific issue to speak of is timing cover corrosion behind the water pump if pump has been cavitating and/or coolant with a corrosion inhibitor hasn't been used.

The 302 V8 is reliable as the k's go up as long as it is maintained properly, but that can be said about any motor really. As for trying to find a manual V8, I'm fairly sure that only the XR8's had that option, all the rest would be auto as standard unless modified by the owner.

i used to have a el 5l and yea the only problem i had was the timing chain cover corroded out. other than that i had it from 200,000 kms to around 320,000 kms and absolutly zero problems. good old steel windsor holds up well.
i have also spoken to some people that have the windsor v8s in ef/el xr8's and swear by overy 400,000 kms without worries.

cool, just what i was hoping for...thanks guys.
seen plenty at around the 100,000-120,000...good to know they have a future. and yeah, i figured i would have to go the xr8, not alot of manuals in the family sedan. |

i bought my au xr when it had 90k on the clock i've easily done 100k in it since i've added supercharger, cams ect ect never had any problems i'm now up to 480hp and as reliable as the day i bought it i keep hearing the motor splits into 2 with too much hp or the gearbox is going to explode lol but drive anything nice and look after it. it will look after you

the cam sync sensor runs dry and wears the shaft and body, it make a god awful noise when it does.
Genuine replacements are not cheap |

My car is a statement for the Windsor's reliability, 2.5 years of being raped harder than a chick at a club who's on roofies, and not once has it been off the road for a MOTOR specific breakage.

i should also ask...if anyone has experience with BA V8's...i'd be keen to find out about them too.
The AU is 10 years old now...i would like a newer one than that, even if i have to borrow more for it. and the B-series is very sexy. and 5.4 sounds cooler than 5.0 anyway...haha |

yea the au is 10 years old but i think the windsor 302 is 25 or so.
anyway as my side thing says i have a ba xt falcon with the 5.4 v8. it is the single overhead cam motor with vct. these motors have awsom torque through the rev range and i rekon are a great fun car to drive. i have also driven some xr8s with the 4v dual overhead cam without vct and yea they are good they lack any power up till 3000rpm. its like u put ur foot in it and hmm nothing...nothing..nothing..3000rpm whoo thers som power. then rev limit at 5000. lame
