What the hell causes axletramp when the wheels are spinning in a straight line??
..And more importantly, can it be resolved! |

Here are a few things that can stop it.
ANTI-TRAMP BAR Additional method of locating a live axle to prevent axle tramp during hard acceleration. TRAMP ROD Suspension rod to reduce Axle Tramp. I dont know what causes it (I've had it explained but I cant remember). |

Normally a problem associated with leaf spring suspension rather than a 4-link (with watts linkage) set up. Maybe your rubbers are worn, allowing the rear axle to wind up like a leafy does. Maybe new rubbers or rear shocks is what you need.

It's caused by the leaves having to act as axle locators which causes them to wind up and snap back into place.

I know the shocks on my car are completely haddit.. So maybe that could be the problem? Well, i guess im either gona have to keep my foot above half throttle OR replace the shocks...... Replace the shocks it is Thanks guys! |

I have the same problem in the xr.
New shocks too. Mine only does it on certain road surfaces tho. Some roads feel like the car will blow apart from the tramp, others it just spins like its on ice. The only way i can reduce it is to either make sure I dont wheel spin on hard take offs or, get the wheels spinning really quick straight up. That usually helps a little.

Yeah exact same issues here mate. Only on certain road types, and yes, it does feel extremely bad, the the back end is playing skip rope or something But yeah, even if i spin the wheels straight up in a straight line (ie. at a set of lights) on most road surfaces it will just hop, skip & jump all over the place! Literally! |

Wheel tramp is literally, wheel slip, grip, slip, grip, slip etc.
If you picture the wheels, revolving forward, the diff housing is rolling backwards to the point of hitting the pinion snubber, or whatever mechanical way there, maybe bushes is the trailing arms compressing, leaf springs winding up, like an "s" then it cant roll back anymore, so the wheels spin, then the diff rolls forward, and the whole process begins again. You can get Shelby style tramp rods, which locate on the lower spring mounting plate, and have a rod back to the front eye of the leaf spring. Otherwise, XA/B GT falcons had factory fitted tramp rods mounted over the top of the diff, and back to the chassis rail. The old "cat killers" chrome bits of box steel bolted to the underside of the leaf springs are illegal though. In the case of XE through AU live rear axles, I have found that good rear shocks, and urethane bushes on the axle, rubber bushes on the body works the trick and rerely get any hop from the axle. Decent shock's and fit radius rod like the 5.8 V8's have on XD's etc...

mate it is really simple....if all is in order no axle tramp, it is an indication of worn rear suspension parts. make sure all is well and all will be ok.
ps be carefull as axle tramp can easily shatter diff centres and snap axles, i have seen a wheel fall off a car after a tramping burn out....and i have also destroyed a 9" centre in my coupe at summer nats 17 with axle tramp since fitted new king springs leaves and koni adjustable shocks with new urethane bushes and no more axle tramp |
