Hi Guys,

The otherday I was out in my BA XR8, its got 105,000km on the clock, its putting out about 290kw with an aftermarket exhaust, chip & Tune and big mouth air intake. Its got the standard 4spd Auto. The car gets pushed every now and again but most of its mileage has been just pottering around town shuttling the kids and towing the odd trailer (nothing over 2ton)

I floored it off the line (trying to bet a Holden) and as I changed into 2nd using tip tronic all of a sudden something felt wrong and then there was smoke everywhere. I pulled over to find it has dumped its Trans fluid and the smoke was the fluid burning off the exhaust. I haven't had a chance yet to get under it and find out whats happened exactly but I was just wondering is this a common fault? I would have thought those gearboxes would be good for 500hp???

Let me know what you know about these gearboxes.

Cheers

they can cope with about 450 hp at the most im on the 3rd one now i am told that you either have jack s**t power or go for a c6 or i was told about a 4 speed nissan conversion but that was like 8 grand
if ya box is still working i'd say get it looked at asap
mine blew the c3 clutch and left me with first and second only

Yeah my 4spd auto in my BA lasted till about 120,000 before it let go. But when mine let go you could free rev it in every gear. Had to get my mate to tow me up my driveway lol. So i reckon WILDEB is right, just a burst line or something simple.

Mine was owned by Christian Broadcasting Society in Sydney for the first 80 thou and i doubt they were out the back doing roll backs n s**t in it, so im confident the box was treated well. In any-case i used to drop my AU back into first at 80K's and all sorts of weird and not so wonderfull things. and its still going strong with 330,000 on the clock, i mean yeah its clunky as all hell but it still goes.

Just luck of the draw if you ask me. And my BA didnt have a tranny cooler when i got. I reckon the last people used it for towing and didnt have a cooler on it, as there was a tow ball on the back. Why else would a Christian buy a V8?

Shoulda dropped a T56 in it, still kicking myself aye.

I've removed the gearbox and sent it away after finding metal shavings in the Torque Converter housing and it seems the Oil pump gave out. I've been quoted $4,500 to strip and full rebuild the gearbox.... I've seen a few 4spd auto's from BA Falcons for sale for $800 to $1500 is there a difference between the XR8 Gearbox and the 6cyl XT & XR6 Gearbox?

Thanks

i could of got a 2nd hand for bout $1100 but io recon id be rebuilding that in 6 months time anyway
p.s xr's have got different gear ratios

$4500 is too much for a rebuild! V8 and Turbo boxes are stronger.

The BA 4 spds in the XR8's and the 3v Falcons/fairlanes are the same but the XR6 & T's are the different.

how often was the box serviced, regardless what the book says, you should change the trans fluid and filter every 25,000k's
as stated, it could be a cooler line, or it could have blown a servo cover gasket out

Hey Mate,

$4,500 is way too much for jus a rebuild, maybe for fitting and with a trans cooler but even then its expensive. Should be looking at about $3,500 fitted, thats the cheapest quote i could get when mine blew up. But i paid a bit extra for a trans cooler, and id recommend you do the same.

The V8 Boxes are stronger then the standard 6 cyl boxes so youll need one for a V8. For piece of mind its better to get it rebuilt i reckon, rather than a second handy.

have a read of the workshop manual it says that the xr8/gt has different ratios so i'd be inclined to have yours rebuilt plus the xr/gt box has a stronger gear set apprantly
deff get the biggest trans cooler you can fit ,bpt sell ones with a thermo fan fitted to the trans cooler thats what im looking at very shortly
