Hypothetical question here.

If I was to build up a 5.0L up for a 4wd that currently weights about 2.1t, what heads and cam would people recommend? Heads would have to be alloy to reduce weight, I was looking at Edelbrocks E street heads 170cc due to how cheap they are.

This is pure hypothetical, with this I am comparing it against a 1UZFE-3UZFE all versions including purchase cost of a half cut.

Very good question there. I'm looking at this very closely as this is something that I may do down the track. For the size and availability of parts, a SBF is a good thing especially with those new e streets. I looked at the Toyota V8 too, but a decent 5.0 will have more torque to begin with. Is this for the bus jase?

You forgot to say put a 351 stroked to 393 in it.

Since you're not chasing peak HP, a cheap stroker kit (cast crank, I beam rods, hyper pistons) would give a really good torque boost accross the rev range without any added weight. These can be had for as little as $1200 in NZ, so must be cheaper in Australia. Remember there is no replacement for displacement.

By the time your finished with a stroker it will end up costing over $3000
$1200+ stroker kit would change the pistons
$300 girdle
$500+ balance/machine
$500+ assembly
$300+ cam
then, rollers, pushrods, mod heads, mod sump, tune and then price is out of control. E-street heads sound good with a nice cam

He's looking for torque, so a girdle is not required. Machining is the same cost for 306 or 347 except for notching the bores maybe an extra $100, balancing maybe an extra $100. Assembly is the same cost for 306 or 347. I'd actually stick with the standard cam, they give good torque. Extra cost is about NZ$1400, which is around AU$1200??

Personally I'd use GT40P heads, again because it's a torque motor so higher flows aren't needed. Thereby saving some coin on the E-Street heads, pushrods, roller rockers etc. The used GT40P's I've rebuilt usually only need a valve job and new springs to make them mint again. Just need to watch the ones from AU3 XR8's with stainless valves as they wear the guides really badly and those that have been run on LPG for lot's of k's which cause the valve seats to receed.

This combo would be no more expensive (probably cheaper) and way more torquey than a rebuilt 5.0 with E-street alloy heads and associated hardware.

Gtp's std roller cam with maybe 1.7 rockers and 10.5 compression & studs..
Good ignition ...
Gear ratio's will help also..

For good torque, keep the GT40 style intake for the longer runners.

Hey Macca, Do you really want to use a 5.0?
Because, all jokes aside a stock F-series 351 would be the shot in such heavy vehicle.

Thanks for the replies, this is only a hypothetical, I was thinking of doing this due to I have a 96 5.0L in the shed, it has most of the parts to build up but I wouldn't bother with the E7 heads or HO intake.
I wouldn't bother with GT40P heads, for the money people are still asking for second hand GT40Ps I would be better off purchasing the new Edelbrocks from the states, without freight etc you can purchase them for under a $1000AUD, so I reckon you could get them here for under $1400, pretty hard to rebuild the GT40P heads including purchase cost for that price.
Quote:
All Edelbrock E-Street cylinder heads are assembled with manganese bronze valve guides, powder metal interlocking valve seats, stainless steel one-piece valves with hardened tips, damper springs, 3/8 in. screw-in studs, and guideplates. Edelbrock E-Street cylinder heads are ideal for entry level (300 hp to 400 hp) street performance engines operating in the idle to 5,500 rpm range.

My heart says Ford but if I was to do the V8 conversion to the van I think it would have to be the 1UZFE, done with a front cut, still a lot of work but I don't have a complete 5.0L EFI system (harness etc) either and a front cut comes with most of what is needed, but again this is all hypothetical, as we don't have the money or another registered car to do such a project.

Hypothetically yes, if it was to be done it wouldn't be the first to have a V8 and much more
