Putting a deposit down on a black manual AU XR8 today, $17,000 with 130,000km on the clock, TS50 wheels and a lil lowered. from a ford dealer.
1 Question, on the way home from getting her i want to get a new exhaust put on. I have heard some amazing AU 8's around and was wondering what the best set up is to get that deep loud roar without it sounding tacky and s**t. Does anyone have personal preferences and why?

I think the 5.0L will sound hot with whatever you throw at her.
My engine came with Genie extractors, factory cat, factory Y pipe and ~3" single muffler to the rear. Sounds just like a windsor should. I think the trick is just running a single muffler, and up to 2.5" pipe. Unfortunately twin system is a bit hard, as the fuel tank gets in the way - but that wont be a problem for me once she's on straight LPG

A twin system can be done if your car isn't lowered. I went in to get a twin system fitted and they said could only do it if I put the stock springs back in. Like that was ever going to happen.
I have pacemaker PH4000 extractors, sports cats, redback muffler, single 2.5" system with no resonator. I am changing the cat back system to stainless muffler, 3" stainless pipe and putting a resonator back in. It drones too much without one when cruising up a hill.

I had the drone problem, my local exhuast guy put in a lukey muffler and replace the 2.5" tailpipe with 2.25" and a 5" oval tip and the drone is gone, still sound right when the boot is planted though, and is plesantly quite at cruise.

Please do not tell me you have a milo tin as your exhaust tip!!!!! That is pure rice!

I have to disagree with waggin here..
a stock windsor will sound like s**t without a decent exhaust, and even then... it wont compare to a worked windsor. Just got to a reputable exhaust place. I have heard some shockers - but they have all been cheap a** dodgy systems.

It's a stepped on milo tin nah, not a milo tin, it actually fills out the stock EF bar quite nicely, I was going to go for a twin tip but a test fit looked crap, to me anyway

im happy how mine sounds ive got pacemaker extractors twin hi flow cats, then into a single 3 inch exhaust with one very small muffler in the middle with twin dump pipe tips, ive only ever had compliments on how it sounds but it is very loud. it all depends on how loud u want it.
mine is also manual and it crackles and gurgles nicely when gearing down. as i see it its a v8 the louder the btter youll never get the ugly droney sound like some 4 or 6 cylinders with loud exhausts get unless u put some cheap dodgey system on there. i have a friend with an auto series 2 xr8 with the same setup as me only his exhaust starts off as a twin 2.5 inch and goes to a single 3 inch just near the diff and mine is louder than his. regards from adam

I need a good system for my new baby - EL Ghia V8.
I was thinking of Pacemakers, twin high flow cats straight into a 3" system with high flow muffler and stainless oval tip. I've done two systems including extractors on my 2 I6 EFs and they were close to $1000 each. How much would that hurt the wallet for the V8? |

It isn't just the exhaust used that makes the different sounds, it is like XR8Chic said, the worked engine makes the better sound, different firing order, port size etc also makes the different exhaust noises as well.

I have a lukey 3" system, pacemakers and twin 3" high flow cats and think it sounds great, loud and deep but very little drone.

How much would that hurt the wallet for the V8? The windsors are a bit more expensive because the headers cost more and because they run 2 cats. You could get away with around $1200-1400 for a nice 3", pacemakers and twin highflow cats if you shop around. |
