All AU V8's have GT40P's and the 220kw engines got GT40P's with larger valves and some minor porting. IMO you don't really need any more work on the 220kw heads unless you are going to stroke the engine, they flow quite well as is.
As for cam, the 220kw cam is a fairly small one, at 468/472th lift and 203/209@50th duration. The Crane 2031 cam is excellent option for the 220kw engines and should give you around 25-30rwkw improvement. You may also need a chip (like a chiptorque) as the AU's seem to have idle issues with aftermarket cams. |

i have the crane 2031 in my car, and I definatly recommend it.
Nice, a little lumpy, but very streetable. however, I do have a unichip, (my car wouldnt idle when I first got the cam, but then again, very little under my bonnet is stock)

thanks for the tips.
you are probably right, i won't touch the heads. i am actually quite content with the current set-up (stock). i mean 220kw is nothing to yawn about. but if there is something i can do that is simple and cheap, why not! my current mods include a unifilter and a 2.5" twin into 3" single tailpipe. sounds screamy up top. a little drowny down low, but live with it. i am off to see mick webb this W/E to see what can be done. but you guys are right...probably look at cam and chip. i am leaning towards a chiptorque, mainly 'cause of cost. yes...i know, there's no dynotune. also i have to send my ECU to the goldcoast for them to put the chip in...a pain. once again thanks for the pointers. |

I bet Mick Webb tells you not to bother with aftermarket chips.

Is the crane 2031 suitable for an au1 manual xr8? It's got exhaust and a few minor mods.
Will it need a chip straight up?

Will it need a chip straight up? AU1's run 1.6 ratio rockers so you should look at the crane 2030 which is a touch more agressive than the 2031 which is made for the 1.72 rockers. E-series V8's can run much larger cams without any idle issues, but the AU's seem to have problems with most aftermarket cams so people normally just get a chip. Chiptorque even though they are off the shelf shound be quite decent as they have done a number of AU's with these cams and have the programming already done. |

Will it need a chip straight up? I've just installed a Crane 2030 cam, Crane 44308-1 Valvespring kit, and YT ST2047 RR's on my AU1 XR8 Auto. Only other mod is electronic shiftkit, and a couple of holes in the front of the airbox. You'll definitely need to change the valvesprings. If you go with 2030, you wont need to replace rockers (although I would recommend it). You will likely need to change pushrods to different length to get correct lifter preload. If you go with 2031, you will definitely need to change rockers, as they are designed for 1.7:1 (stock is 1.6:1). If you get adjustables, you wont need to change pushrods, but you will need to take to your rocker covers with a hammer for clearance. Idle is rough, but certainly no need for chip straight up. Did a 14.5 @ 95mph last weekend, and thats in a heavy auto ute. You should be a bit quicker again. I'll have it on the dyno this Sunday. Dave. |

spoke to mick webb over the weekend. he is going to charge me $1200 for a cam job. that is his cam spec (SVO310), new timing gear, fitment and tune. does this sound reasonable?
he also recommends a bit of head work on the GT40p's - $1500 - $2000. this with a decent set of headers (HM) should pick up about 40 - 50 kW |

Sounds OK...its a bastard of a job to do. Does that include new springs/retainers/keepers to suit?
