Hi Guys have a BF XR8, switched on the headlights this eavning when driving home to find they are not working. No park lights, No Low Or high beam or even cluster lights. Now switch the Lights to auto and they work even the cluster works.
Now dont think its a fuse as they wouldn't work at all.

any Ideas what it could be?

Good chance it could be the combo switch. Ive heard of them playing up on B series especially BFs and if it is you wanna hope its under warranty. Ford charge a fortune to replace it and its a pain in the a*** job.

Just flicked through my dealer warranty handbook and looks like im covered if it is a switch.

Still seems funny that all of a sudden it worked and then nothing, I thaught it would flicker or turnoff by its self before giving up the ghost. Has anyone pulled the switch to bits to identify the failure point

What happens, is the wires that go to the headlight switch, run up the indicator stalk, and the movement of the stalk eventually wears one of them through, with the symptoms you've got (auto only) sounds like it's the same as I had.

If it's under warranty, get them to fix it. If not, it's easy (although fiddly) to fix as long as you can do some soldering.

Went to Ford and spoke to the service advisor who was certain it was the indicator combination stalk as well. So I got some part numbers and a Quote for the part $440 ( not cheap) then went across town to the dealer that I baught the car from and gave them the part number, also speaking to their service advisor who perviously worked at ford. Its booked in next week, aftermarket warranty will cover everything so happy about that.

Picked up the car today Lights are working now. They even replaced the PCV or rocker cover breather hose that perished ($165) from ford all under warranty.

now here is the next problem, stability control warning light in the dash stays on.
seems like maybe the angle sensor in the steering wheel is out and needs calibrating after the steering wheel was removed. will have to ring tomorow. is this a problem only ford can fix or any qualifted workshop?

You would think they would have noticed that before they gave the car back to you. Your ford dealership sounds like there clowns. :| .

Removing the wheel wouldn't have changed the SAS (YAW sensor), that's further down the steering column.

93EB nothing wrong with the ford dealer in town they seem good to deal with, I purchased the car from DC motors used Cars, They are the biggest dealer in town selling Nissan, Subaru, Honda, Hyundai, Jeep, Crysler and Mercades. and these guys are who the warranty is through.

I did notice that the Settings on the stereo where the same so looks like the Battery was not disconected and left for 30min during the work and most importantly removal of the air bag, Big No No. So will try to disconect the battery for 20 min or so in the morning just to reset things and see what happens.

No problem. well so long as they are helping you out with sorting the car thats the main thing. But they still should have noticed the light on when they fixed it and tried to solve that problem before the car was returned to you.
Let us know how you go when you pull the battery of. And from experience the ford dealerships are usually great people its just the apprentices working on the cars that worry me.

no pics, but yeah it needs to be attached...

from the manual
Quote:
8. Fit the Steering Angle Sensor over the alloy shaft,
ensuring the connector is facing away from the
driver. Align the key on the white plastic sleeve,
with the keyway in the sensor. The sensor has a
peg that must engage with the steel bracket on
the steering column, and has three small clips that
hold it in position.

Made a small retainer using some plastic tubeing and some cable ties, Test drove the vehicle and yep all fixed no more faults, so will be calling DC motors and getting them to order the correct little retainer. Hope it only comes with the sensor and hope its expensive this will teach them to do their work correctly and test the vehicle properly!
