Hi Guys,
I wanted to throw a 290 in and pull out my 260. Reason being: the 260 will only make around 240 at the treads with bolt-ons. The 290 will make more with bolt ons and respond better to cams. Also thought of waiting for a Coyote 5.0 and throwing that in instead of the 290, but don't know how much of a pain it would be to bolt in and if you could get the Ti-VCT going without the need for a Motec or similar. Also thought of camming the 260 and raising the comp but not sure if it's worth the $$ over dropping in the 290 and camming that instead. Anyone else been staring down this path?

another option - keep the 260 and charge it (the lower CR will help you there).
A 290 will of course drop right in, but are expensive as they've got FPV tax. Mine with bolt ons is doing 290rwkw. See my sig.

You don't have to wait to get a coyote and Ford racing already has the controls package to go with it. Besides "motec or similar" wouldn't be able to keep up with genuine Ford.
If you can get a 290 somewhere it's the way to go as a starting point but if you want to go further than that build your 260 with good aftermarket rods and pistons with some compression....other wise do the same and put a blower on it. |

Thanks guys. How much should i pay for a 290 complete motor, around 5k? How much can you sell a 260 with 115k kms on it for roughly? 3-4k?
Will the 4spd auto be an issue with the 290? Cheers.

Im sure the XR8, 6T's already have a stronger than standard 4 speed box. BA GTs with the 290 ran the 4 speed auto before the BF came out with the ZF. Ford felt it was capable at the time to use it. But...... You start to play, you start to pay Everything has limits.

My diff is currently proof of that.* To keep the 4spd together behind a 290, the factory ECU is heavily torque limited. In short, it'd be a shame/waste to stick a 4spd behind a 290. * I recently got a new tune which greatly reduced the torque management, and a week later, the diff has exited in large pieces - broken casing. (no pics yet, only happened last night)

both engines are basically identical just different crank and cams. my boss 260 keeps up with most GTs and beats some. not worth a complete engine swap.

Because there's some very powerful XR6T's (capable of 9's) running the old 4 speed. Then can be built strong enough. And I'm sure the coyote is a little too new still for nayone to have done a conversion yet. I don't foresee any major problems though. The FG engine bay is similar to the BA/F. I imagine you'd have to put in some FG front cross member/steering/suspension as it's in a different position to B series.

The BA stuff will be fine for mounting the engine....it's still basically a modular, engine mount and bellhousing wise. It will of course have much less height than a 5.4.
It's possible the BA pcm will be able to take the code of the FG for VCT control but even if it can't you could adapt an FG pcm....obviously some wiring changes will be required. |

Not so sure about that, having seen one in person, it still sits pretty high in the bay. Probably doesn't need the bulge but wouldn't be far from needing it. I think FPV's charger/intake manifold are still pretty big.
