why a cast iron LS1/2 ????? They're all alloy to begin with, and as proven are more than capable enough of stupid amounts of power.

By now I'd have my head chewed off on Ford forums. Fordmods is a great forum in that they don't mind a bit of biff. At the end of the day its a blue oval V8 and that is all that really matters.

Then again i've always yearned for a cast iron blocked LS1 or LS2, despite the poxy exhaust note.

Well you should have your head chewed off for mentioning boat anchors on a ford forum. Especially when you say you yearn for them!?!

Obviously not a mechanic.
In the states any serious LS engines use cast iron

We used to import cars from the states.
Who said they were savvy when it comes to engines. Mind you I gotta agree unless you go for a specialist aftermarket thick cast alloy block most are easily outgunned for strength by a cast iron block.

Why do people think the LS1 has no bottom end power compared to the boss motor.
I'm currently looking at newer cars and I was open minded for the first day of searching. I drove a 260 5spd manual and was shocked how gutless it was under 100km compared to the 255 ls1 Monaros and SS' I've been driving.
I drove a 2nd, then a 3rd thinking it may have been a dud, but the 3rd being a 6sp manual BF2 assured me that the LS1s have the low down power not the Boss 260's?

Well I drive a BAGT and a 351w Falcon and a 351C Falcon and frankly the BA does lack some real bottom end but I don't expect a 4valve per cylinder, small bore, relatively small displacement engine to be able to cut it against a 2 valve per cylinder, large bore, large displacement engine.
I still love driving it but it should have had a larger bore spacing and therefore bigger bore and a shorter stroke to achieve greater displacement then it wouldn't have such a massive rotating mass that could rev higher and faster....something a 4 valve head really needs.
A 3V 5.4 is a much better use of the base engine.
The DOHC engine should have had stronger rods and pistons from the factory and a 7000rpm redline.

Don't Worry Guys, This explains it really well. :)

why would you get a long stroke ...longer than the six , block that wants to lug away and make awsome torque at low revs, destoy the whole design of it by putting 4 valve high flow heads on it with short runner intake that wants to rev to bits ......slam it on top and expect it too work

and end up with a motor that now has no port velocity ....which ruins the low down torque

and is stressed to the max by piston speed and too much rotating mass at high revs which limits the affect of the 4 valve heads :?

to look at it in reverse it would be like bolting e7te heads on a 4 bolt boss 302 racing block

stroke 4.0l 16 5.4 boss 5.7 351

99.3mm 105.8 87.5

bore 92.26 90.2 100

you can stroke a 351 to more than 427 ci before it gets close to the bore to stroke ratio of the boss 5.4 i know the 427 is spinning a greater mass but it just gives a comparison to whats physically goin on inside

well owning a eb 5.0l and a ba xr8 i do find the the xr8 engine better for driving every day but with the heads cam and exhaust i have on my 5.0l it sounds better

both are good engines for me thoe the old 302 has the feeling of it just wont die no matter how much you feed it

the boss has yet to give me the same feel

I've got secret video of the new Ford V8.

Quad cam, 32 valve, short stroke, composite construction - lighter than alloy.

Take that GM parts list shopping HSV.

Well I can't bag the Boss 260, it's been very relaible considering what i've done to it, as far as timing chain issues, if mine was going to let go it would have by now BUT i do think it's a bit doughy down low compared to our other cars but that will be overcome in the next couple of months.

We own the other brand and my BA XR8 ute and my ute is still more comfortable than the other two for long hauls and it's dumped.

Dave

ok, i work for a ford dealership, and the problem with boss motors comes down to the servicing. 15,oookm is a long time between oil changes, and a lot of owners wont make the first oil change till almost 20,000.
The compression rings wear prematurely, and normally cylinder number 5/6 ends up with less than 120psi compression.and an engine rebuild on a boss isnt cheap...close to $8,500

So frequent oil changes and good quality oils like mobil 1 or castrol edge is a good start

and all boss motors from about 2004 onwards come out with the revised timing chain tensioner

I thought the compression ring problem was fixed early on (BA2) due to the many owner complaints of oil consumption, and long run in periods. etc.
