Heya Gang,
Some people be saying how the Boss 260's hate being modded and they break timing chains easy? What do Boss owners think of this? Im planning on getting a new V8, and still havnt decided whether i want an LS1 or a Boss 260. Cheers People |

they don't hate being modded..
They are just slow. xr6t's are faster. |

I have not heard of a BOSS throwing a timing chain yet. They do respond well to mods, but of course turbos are better in that department. The main things to watch for/upgrade when doing mods on a BOSS are the Oil pump gears and Timing Chain Tensiors (which i think you maybe thinking about)

Like MR XR said, the oil pump gears are the main problem with em (besides having no power down low) They like to be modded and go hard with the right ones

I had an LS1 powered statesman for about 6 months and i wasnt that happy with the motor. It had a lot of top end but lacked it right down low. If you are going to buy one check for any engine noises on start up. Oil usage has been an issue on them as well and also enquire whether it had been recalled. They do have alot of guts (my WH stato ran a 14.88 stock) and with a MAFless tune and an exhaust should see a low 14 high 13 depending on the vehicle. But after driving a Pursuit ute i know what i rather.

lol, i drive em all the time, an xr8 is quicker than an xr6t unless you get a dud. if you got rid of traction control, had a better exhaust and a manual tranny the xr8 would be a good car.

early XR8 motors had old level timing chain tensioners on them that made them rattle on cold startup. i forget what date they changed them though

They are just slow. xr6t's are faster. in stock form its pretty hard to split them performance wise. the first 5k or so you spend on mods (all the usual bolt ons and flash) will reap pretty much the same rewards on both as well. both will end up with somewhere between 230 and 260rwkw. 260 is very optimistic. mate of mine has 5sp xr8 and it goes extremely hard. his mate has a xr6t with 240 odd rwkw and he can lineball that one. looking out the windscreen at that bonnet bulge does it for me every time. funnily enough before that he had a vtss 6sp with mafless tune and he reckons it would've been a touch quicker than his boss. both go pretty hard but you have more chance of getting a dud or thrashed out ls1 than a boss.

I think you will find that the XR8's will be lower then the XR6T up until well over 150-160km/h.
If it is a auto XR8 it will be even slower, make sure you get a Manual XR8. With the turbo's it doesnt matter which one you get cos they are about the same but the auto's will end up quicker Griffo

im in the process of giving my BA Mk11 a new drivetrain & suspension upgrade, due to the severe punishment the mildly worked boss I have, I've spent only minimal $$ enhancing, 376hp @ 6250 at the treads, But there does appear to be a few dog Boss engines getting around
Ive had a few runs from the lights against both 5.7 the 6L commodores, and they do go hard, but I found once I gave up trying to find the low down power ,and started to tune it for peak power around 4000-6500rpm that I had a major advantage by the end of 2nd gear. Go the ford! I think the FPV range looks much meaner than the astra on steroids!

maybe stock...... but to get the windsor to go much better without a realy good cheque book, the windsor is just a good "boat anchor" even this task is a little out of its league!

Can only laugh at the facts, spent sweet F&@k all on mine and aint found a BA that can beat it yet without having spent at least couple a grand. I was looking to buy the boss 290 when the dealer principle said do yourself a favour and drive this. I did it went better I bought it and I saved S&@t loads. Go the 5.6 no substitute for cubic inches and low down torque. LOL |
