IMO that defeats the purpose of fitting underdrives, if you reduce the size of both pulleys, you not acheiving a reduction in parasitic power (hp/kw) drain from the alternator (be it a small as it is), all your acheiving is reducing the flywheel effect that is caused by the larger drive pulley, ie big pulley slower to get going and stop, smaller pulley spins up faster and stops faster, sure you'll increase your rev response, but you'll suffer the same drain of power (minimal anyway). Horses for courses I suppose, so long as your happy. I reckon the Ford ones are the only ones to have as they provide the best of both worlds, just do you homework and don't listen to hype of either brand.

The water pump and power steering would be using a lot more power than the alternator, so it isn't a total waste.
Remember the BPT single pulley replaces the crank and slows everything down as well, although the downside of this kit is the slightly different length belt you need. I know it sounds like that'll be a big problem, but really, how often do you throw a serpentine belt? The only ones I've heard of were due to idler bearings siezing or pulley's being out of alignment. Also, don't you need to get the water pump pulley machined on the FRPP set? I remember Shane (MrLandau) used to sell these kits on here, and had to get them machined to suit the Aussie 5.0 water pump. |

I thought the BPT still used the same belt?

The BPT single pulley kit uses a shorter belt. It's the only way it can work.

Ok. They also supply a 3 pulley kit that uses the same belt though don't they?

I'm not sure mate, you're best off contacting BPT, the pully I bought was one of the very first they sold, 3 years ago.

Nope, the BPT kit uses the stock belt.

Well actually it doesn't defeat the purpose of fitting the underdrives because the main parasitic loss is due to the water pump so once the maximum drive reduction to that and the other accessories is sorted via crank pulley diameter it's a matter of sizing the alternator pulley so you don't have any drawbacks like; charging problems and not being able to use the stock belt. The point is that most of the kits that people have used(the FRPP kit included) have ended up with charging problems and some cooling(but this is less common). If you like yours that's good but I've done my homework and this is why I recommend the BPT kit over any others. Pete. |

Pete. Damn, cause I just bought a shorter belt for the BPT underdrives, thinking they were the same as the other kits. For Sale: 1 brand new belt suited for EL with underdrives, 25mm shorter. |

I'm talking about the E-Series V8 kit. I 100% guarantee the single pulley kit needs a shorter belt, how else can it work?
