Hi everyone,
As mentioned in my other threads, I'm building an AU series 5.0L to throw in my XH. I've had so much conflicting information from engine builders around Adelaide that right I'm back where I started! I didn't realise there would be this much running around to order a cam (took me 8 weeks to find someone who would measure the unstamped rockers) Motor is: AU 200KW GT40p's Yella Terra Roller Rockers 1.6 ratio Roller Lifters *I'm not sure if springs are stock or not* Could anyone please help me and recommend some tough cam choices? Hp figures, price, brand etc *I will have stall converter and tune/j3* *Would really prefer not to change springs or lifters* Thanks heaps for your help it will be much appreciated.

Well, here's another thread where every man and his dog (and engine builder) will have an opinion...
So, with the Yella Terra 1.6 RRs, I assume you have the 200kw V8....which had biggest lift of the XR8 motors. Too bad they didn't put 1.7 RRs on them like the 220. If you upgrade your cam, you need to change the valve springs. Perhaps get yours tested at a machine shop before buying new ones. Not much point getting a bigger cam if your springs won't handle it. I think Trickflow make double valve springs that can be fitted without machining the spring seats. As you're retaining the stock Explorer intake and GT40P heads, a cam with any more than 0.500 lift is going to be restricted by the small port and valve sizes (especially in the upper rev range). Comp Cams 2030 or 2031 are often recommended on the US Mustang forums for those with iron heads. I bought an XE264HR cam for about $340AU incl freight from Summit. You can get one for a similar price from VPW. HP output will depend on what's been done to your engine and its condition (140-150rwkw is a starting point for a stock 5.0L Explorer motor). I'll leave it to the experienced V8 guys to tell you how much hp you can make.

Haha, I know it's been posted before, just wanted more/fresh input Heads have been milled and valve springs tested. All good. Engine has been rebuilt Do I need to change pushrod length with those cams?

I'm a fan of the TFS 1 cam. Nice wide rev range (1500-5500rpm) and a nice idle. 0.499" lift on 1.6 rockers which suits the 40p flow figures and it's a pretty cheap cam for what it is.

Any ideas on kw increase with chip/tune & exhaust? I've had a tuner in Adelaide say I can get 270 at the fly which I think is a tall order after speaking with other companies.

Small errors in cam machining, keyway placement and timing chain slack can have an cumalative effect. With pedestal rockers, IMO I'd say yes to changing the pushrods (because of the extra lift and limited adjustment with shims).

As the TFS1 cam has less lift, then can reuse your pushrods. I'd still use a pushrod checker anyway. You will find out if the pushrod length is OK when you start doing the preload and torque adjustment of the pedestal bolts.

One thing I've noticed since starting this project is how difficult it is to get power out of these motors.
When the motor was in pieces in front of me, I thought, "hey, lets stroke it, throw a lumpy cam in and throw some awesome flowing heads on top" Then, I looked at the price tag vs kw's gains... Unlike my other upcoming project 5K in a 2j... twice the power.. lol

Unlike my other upcoming project 5K in a 2j... twice the power.. lol depends on how much power your after? you also got to keep in mind the Windsor 5.0 is a design from the 1960s, heavy cast iron pushrod engine... no sohc or dohc, no multi valves ect. |

Hey Troyman, I've let go of 220rwkw (yep rwkw) promised by one dyno tuner as that's 270 n/a with GT40P'S - I don't think it's possible If I could manage 200rwkw with a good torque curve, I'd feel this whole thing had been worthwhile.

Use a Comp XE276HR-12 with 1.6 rockers will give 0.512" lift. Change your springs any time you run a performance camshaft the factory springs will not support the faster ramp rates of a decent performance camshaft.
That cam, ported Explorer intake, unported GT40P heads made 291rwhp in a manual AU XR8 ute. You'll need the ecu retuned and a minimum of a 2800 stall.
