With those heads, probably a Trickflow stage 1 cam.

With the stock valve train I found the B303 to be pretty good, as it only has a moderate lift, not overworking/straining the stock valve springs & rocker arms. But at the same time has plent of duration, resulting in an awsome lumpy idle & good top end power gains.
I have had one of these in my car previously (before I upped the stakes). Power starts to come on at about 3500 and by 4000rpm it roared all the way past the redline. The idle note is very hard to beat as well.

Well the series 2 had E7 heads which means equal cam duration ( I think ) and if that's the case, then a Ford alphabet cam is also single pattern duration which would be a good match.

I thought the EL2 had GT40P heads??

I think the series 2 received the explorer intake and TB ( and possibly the GT extractors ) but the heads remained the same.
The Sprints and EL GT / FBT's received the GT40 irons. The AU XR8's had GT40P heads.

Ok, so will a crane 2030 with 1.6 rollers on GT40P heads all fit up ?
Or what cobination do you guys recommend with GT40P heads ? Ive read so many things that I am now way too confused. Im after a pretty nasty idle lol, I will be fitting stronger springs as well. It will be a el 5.0, with GT40p heads slightly ported, and soon to have a explorer/edelbrock intake. So here goes.. please complete this! !! GT40P heads : What Cam ? What Rollers rockers , and do i have to get the head modified at all to fit them ? What Springs ? Hope someone can give me a straight forward answer Last edited by Stevo on Wed Aug 23, 2006 7:54 pm, edited 1 time in total. |

i got the crane 2020 cam with crane 1.6 rr's and the edelbrock performer/gt40p's off T3. runs pretty damn well, but im considering goin for a slighly larger cam - maybe 2030.
2020 good from around 1500 so good off the line. think 2030 slightly higher - 2000 onwards. wat do others have? trickflow cam? crow? ford racing alpha? |

I think xr8ute runs that combo so you might want to ask his opinion.

I love the 2030 cam....i reckon it works pretty well with the GT40P heads. Its got more valve lift than those heads can really use when they are stock, but some basic porting would help.
I can't say I am a fan of the springs that crane recommend for that cam. I will be using some Crow doubles when it goes back together....not real sure if the spring is too light, but we'll see (135 seat and 319 open). If they dont work out, I've got some slightly heavier Iskys (140 seat and 355 open). With cam, exhaust, and gears i ran a PB of 14.15 @ 98mph in my auto AUI XR8 ute, with stock tune, stock converter, and street tyres. I'd love to run this motor, with ported GT40P's, and ported explorer intake in a nice light weight EB with a 3000-odd rpm converter, and a good tune. With a nice quiet exhaust it could be a stock looking, very low 13 sec sleeper....with some AFR 165cc heads and a custom cam you'd be well into the 12's with an n/a 5L....no need for blowers or strokers. I'll stop mucking around with these heavy AU's one day |

How well does the 2030 get off the line with stock convertor?
And how lopey is the idle? I'm also thinking about a cam, but being an everyday family car on lpg i don't want to go overboard... A little lopey is always good, i don't want the car to shake and rock though lol. |

I reckon its fine with the stock converter. If anything its better than with the stock cam.
Idle is lumpy (in the AU at least) without any tuning. It shakes a bit at idle...enough to make boobs jiggle...lol. Could be made much smoother though with a custom tune and edit. I reckon its just about the perfect off the shelf cam for a GT40 head'd, Cobra/Explorer intake'd, 5L windsor. |

Paul the 2030 sounds very similar to the trickflow so if you've heard mine that's what she'll sound like. If you don't want it to shake and rock then i'd suggest maybe the 2020 cause the others are at the upper limits of stock ECU, although i've heard that the AU can adapt better than the EL, could be a myth. Mine definately sways the car, has got a fair lope to it and sometimes stalls under harsh breaking or if its having a bad day.
Vic the ED Sprint/EB GT come with cast iron GT40 heads and the EL GT/FBT come with GT40P's, same as AU's.....just thought i'd clear that up. Stevo heaps of people go for 2030/1.6's/GT40P's, its a proven combination. Only thing you can consider is 1.7's for a bit more lift and maybe the trickflow cam which is very evenly matched to the 2030. Never looked in to any other cams. The heads will need to be machined for double valve springs too. EBTS50 the 2031 is designed for use with 1.72 roller rockers so that with double valve springs will be fine.....it's slightly calmer than the 2030 i believe. |

but thanks for your replies guys. By the way offyaguts, your car sounded damn mean the other night on the freeway So if a take a set of gt40ps to any machine shop, i just ask for some porting, and machine to suit double vavle springs ? Also larger valves ? Where did you get your stuff done dave, did you say mick webb ? |
