Hey guys getting closer to doing my cam, head and intake swap. Just wanting to be sure bout cam selection and whether i can get away with stock springs. Am almost certain on getting crane 2031 cam, can i use stock springs?? Not intending on revving over 6000rpm?
I had a look a my heads the other day gt40p and noticed the very small exhaust ports.... should i bother getting them cleaned up a little or not worth the worry?? I know this stuff gets talked about alot but i needed to know personaly..thanks

Stock springs are barely good enough for the stock cam IMO, not to mention the extra lift and harsh ramp rates of the 2031 and similar cams.
As mentioned there is a lot on GT40P heads and the benefits in porting, IMO it's not worth it in the majority of cases. They flow enough for most 5L setups, becoming a restriction around 180rwkw or so, and the money spent porting the GT40P's would be better spent on some aftermarket alloys if you needed the flow. |

Plus you didn't mention if you had roller rockers. The stock pressed steel ones won't last long with an aggressive cam.

thats right....ive learnt from experience....stock springs with a cam dont last - especially if you like to rev the engine past 5000rpm on a regular basis....

Had a B303 cam with a fully stock engine for years and never had any problems. Although the B303 is more of a long duration cam rather than a real high lifter.

I have the Crane 2031, and my aftermarket single springs didnt even last.
Get doubles... or your up for a hefty repair bill when they break. (or like me... you just use that as an excuse to get nice new alloy heads when they break)

Yep one of the quickest ways to drop a valve and destroy engine...Std valve springs have been known to break with std cam etc...Plus runing std springs fatigues the crap out of other components..Being valve stem and seats due to hammering from bouncing valve...

I'm looking at the crane springs that are recomended for the 2031. The part no is:(99841-16) single springs with damper??? These fit the heads without any machining, the doubles part no is 99838-16) but require machining,wat does everyone think?

I bought those Crane singles and I broke one after about 30,000kms. Luckily I wasn't getting up it at the time, i was basically idleing, so it did no other damage.
Get the doubles. I believe there are some Comp Cams doubles that fit without requiring machining. Not 100% sure though. |

Consider using these with 2031
Comp Springs #978. installed: 126lbs @ 1.850 in. open : 368lbs @ 1.250in. spring rate : 403 lbs/in. coil bind : 1.195. Richie.
